BBC Proms 2017 - Prom 8 - 20th July 2017
"Celebrating John Williams"

BBC Concert Orchestra
Jamal Aliyev, cello
Annelien Van Wauwe, clarinet
Haringey Vox Choir
Choir of Music Centre London
conducted by
Keith Lockhart

This concert was given at the Royal Albert Hall in London on the 20th of July 2017 to celebrate John Williams in this, his eighty-fifth birthday year. The selection is fairly standard as John Williams concerts go, though there are some nice surprises - in addition to the expected crowd-pleasers Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Superman, we get good suites from more recent scores such as War Horse, The BFG, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and some contrast to the bombast with more subdued scores Munich, and Memoirs Of A Geisha.

A note about the FLAC audio: For the 2017 season of the Proms, the BBC is offering for the first time every concert as a lossless stream. Where FLAC audio is present, this is genuine lossless sound, not a transcode!

Total Concert Time
Audio Version: 2:24:36 (of which 1:34:52 is music, 49:44 is spoken introductions and an interval lecture)
Video Version: 1:58:52 (interval lecture not featured and some trimming of the introductions)

Music played in the concert listed in spoilers...

The Raiders March
Overture to "Goodbye Mr. Chips"
Main Theme from "Jaws"
March from "Superman"
Suite For Cello and Orchestra from Memoirs Of A Geisha - No. 1 - Sayuri's Theme
The Tale Of Viktor Navorski from "The Terminal"
Dartmoor, 1912 from "War Horse"
Hedwig's Theme from "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone"
A Child's Tale - Suite from "The BFG"
Flying Theme from "E.T. The Extra Terrestrial"
Suite from "J.F.K", 1st Movement - Theme from J.F.K
Prayer for Peace from "Munich"
Dry Your Tears, Afrika from "Amistad"
Devil's Dance from "The Witches of Eastwick"
Escapades (No. 3) for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra from "Catch Me If You Can"
March Of The Resistance from "Star Wars - The Force Awakens"
Rey's Theme from "Star Wars - The Force Awakens"
Main Title from "Star Wars - A New Hope"
Cantina Band from "Star Wars - A New Hope"
Harry's Wondrous World from "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone"

All in all, I really like it - except for factual inaccuracies in the commentary (Williams did NOT score NBC Nightly News in the 1960s), Katie Derham's cringe-worthy and repetitive "The force is strong with..." jokes, Keith Lockhart's sloppy outfit, and the casual dress of the musicians themselves!

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree... It grows a little tiresome hearing the same things over and over again and the obsession with "Main Theme" is disheartening - but I suppose this is what has to happen at this sort of event, and I'm happy it happens at all. There were some nice surprises and I think it held together really well. :)

I would love to here something like heartbeeps performed or Images , there does seem to be an obsession with main themes , but like you said at these types of event they have a benchmark they have to stick too . Im actually going to see Back to the future in concert in leeds on sunday , should be interesting and my first experience of thsi type of thing ... its great that film music seems to be getting popular .

Sorry, folks - someone ([email protected]) has seen fit to have all these links - for a concert which is freely available for download by the BBC and has nothing whatsoever to do with Universal Music - taken down.

As this represents 10gb of uploads, it will be some time before I can get them reinstated. In the mean time, I'd really be grateful if anybody who did manage to capture my upload before it disappeared and who has a fast upload speed, may be willing to help out.

Thank you.

And, by the way - whoever voted this thread one star... what's the matter with you?

Ah, I don't care much, it's just the cherry on top, you know? You spend two days doing something, then some overzealous copyright troll has it all deleted, and then somebody else marks it as a piece of shit.

This place has its moments... but you're right, they're getting fewer and further between...

Thanks for your support, my friend. :)

You should have seen my inner rage when all my "Legacy" got deleted.

But are we really sure it's a troll? I shared my Sawada arrangements outside the thread (with passwort and captcha) for like five seconds and gone it was!
And all my shares were rated one star instantly. That has to be a bot!

I refuse to believe genuine tributes and heartfelt shares get to be picked out by some real human being.

tangotreats
07-23-2017, 03:08 PM
If it was a bot, it's a clever one, to follow an anonymised link, work out the password, follow through to Mega, and report them... :O

If hiding links behing captchas and passwords no longer work, it makes me think it might be time to re-evaluate sharing at all. I am not going to do the "PM for link" game - I don't have time for that and I'm fundamentally opposed to it.

Maybe it's time to move on.

Vinphonic
07-23-2017, 03:19 PM
My rather unorthodox solution for Legacy that works for me was to just share a textfile with the links (and a different password for the textfile). If ANY link from that method gets reported, it's without doubt a human being.

So far my assumption of it being a bot seem correct as nothing got removed since then, the worst that could happen in that case is that I have to reupload a 1kb file ;)

tangotreats
07-23-2017, 03:45 PM
It's possible, I guess... I just hate all this sending people on a treasure hunt. Whatever next, are we going to end up saying "Password is the third character from Ponyo's post on January 13th 2016 in the Doctor Who thread, the second character from the surname of the 21st President of the USA, the last number of the year in which the man who published the Theory of Relativity was born, and the fifth character of the first name name of the BBC Concert Orchestra's Principal Conductor from 1966 to 1960" to try to hide it?

I've put the links back up under an avalanche of passwords and captchas and re-directions. If this doesn't work, I'll try it your way.

If that doesn't work, I'll retire from sharing.

Life's too short for this crap...

Normally when people goes to the concerts, always wanted to hear something new.. like a song or new cues. Always playing the main theme on which we all already have heard, now it's time that they become more creatives and play rejected cues or cues that never made it on to the final print, etc

This is so sad. I started the download on the UltraHQ video last night but had to cut it short as I had to shut the system down.
I came back this morning and it's gone. It's frustrating and I can only surmise that somebody here is reporting MEGA links as and when they appear. Half of my public uploads disappeared overnight, leaving only the stuff that was PM only. In hindsight I'm happy I chose the latter, even if it means I may not be able to fulfill requests for a few days.
Needless to say, if anybody has the video in the 50fps version I would greatly appreciate it.

smyslov
07-24-2017, 03:46 PM
I was going after the 50fps file too yesterday but Mega stopped halfway through and said "quota exceeded" or something, never had that before.

Maybe someone could just make a torrent of it? Would that allow it to get out more easily?

I've had a few requests to reupload this... don't ask me why but this upload is like Kryptonite. Wherever you put it, however many passwords you cover it with, encrypted links, multiple redirects, misleading filenames, obfuscated file contents, whatever - within an hour it's gone.

Last time I reuploaded it, Mega decided to delete my account and I lost three years' uploads - all because persons unknown objected to an upload of a concert which was broadcast FOR FREE on the bloody radio.

I'll try to get it up again somewhere - but not at my usual account. I'm not going to risk this happening again.

Maybe a torrent.

(No complaints please - if you don't like torrents, sorry, but seriously... use them anyway. Options are limited for uploads that don't survive at filelockers.)

kooke
12-13-2018, 01:19 AM

Ditto for other members.

I know you don't like sharing privately on request but that's still a non exclusive option (for example, in parallel with torrents) that should be easy to handle with the current level of activity. A warning like "Links will be sent twice a week; you can do other things in the mean time" would make things simpler for you and alleviate stress in the most impatient of us.
