Final Fantasy Rumble 4.0--wait there's a 15 now? [Archive]

It's that time of year again. In conjunction with JohnnyMercyside's Annual Final Fantasy Character Knockout Game (Thread 216564), I bring you the fourth annual Final Fantasy Music Rumble.

This is a Final Fantasy music knock-out game.

128 songs from the main Final Fantasy series (1-15) will be randomly paired head-to-head. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to pick a winner in each pairing.

* You can vote periodically or choose all 64 at once. I will be posting the match-ups in groups of 8 every few days with direct links to Youtube, but you can find the full first-round pairings in a spoiler tag below and search them yourselves. I will edit this when the first round ends, so it's safe to assume all Round 1 voting is still open. All brackets (A-H) will remain open until r2, so feel free to go back and vote if you missed one.

* The first round will remain open at least until 5 people vote.

* This year, Final Fantasy XV will make its first appearance, with 3 tracks advancing out of the qualification round. (Due to late arrival, FF15 had to face the lowest ranked tracks that would have otherwise not required qualification, so they should have a much easier go of it next year.) Additionally, 7 tracks from other games in the franchise have qualified for the first time, representing FF2 (1), FF3 (1), FF5 (1), FF13 (1), and FF14 (3). 12 established tracks that failed to qualify last year will be making a return. That makes 22 total entries in this year's rumble that did not appear in 2016.

* Match-ups will be mirrored in a second music-themed community to increase voting. I am expecting about 2 or 3 contributors, and FFShrine will remain the parent site for this game.

* Tracks will be listed with their cumulative total votes through 2016.

* There is absolutely no standard criteria for voting.

* In the event of a tie, the statistical underdog always wins.

If you're curious, last year's winner was Final Fantasy IX - Vamo Alla Flamenco.
It beat Final Fantasy XI - Ronfaure 4-3 in the finals.
The semi-finalists were Final Fantasy VI - Opening Theme and Final Fantasy VIII - The Extreme.
Walking the Snowy Mountains (FF5), Still More Fighting (FF7), Valley of the Fallen Star (FF7), and Awakened Forest (FF9) made it to the quarterfinals.

Im conflicted about the snowy mountains track. That was a hard choice to make.
As far as Magna Insomnia, i am distressed that it sounds very emo like, and choosing it will make it look like I'm advocating that, but i'm not. I suppose the reason that I'm choosing it over JENOVA is that I haven't even played the game but it's clear what the song is about without even knowing what is going on. I don't think i've ever had such a feeling for any song before. I'm not bagging people for liking emo songs, i'm just saying i'm aware that the song is a very fanboy song, easy to get swept away by it, and that kinda unsettles me, that people are listening to it because they identify with the angst of it.

I'm sure you wont regret going Johnny xD I've been on Distant Worlds in Cracow few years ago and had a great time. Also got autographs of Hironobu Sakaguchi and Masashi Hamauzu on my DS console (Uematsu wasn't present, sadly). I was really lucky because a day before FF concert there was a Ghibli concert with Joe Hisaishi as a part of a spring music festival :3 One of the best times of my life :))

The Mines of Narshe (FF6, 12) -- I've gone full in with FF4's Main Theme every rumble so far and watched as Mines of Narshe somehow managed to never clear the round of 64. Going with another underdog pick here.

I was surprised, all these were really hard choices for me. Apart from maybe the ff11 ones... but ronfaure, that's a song i remember. Lots of attachments to that song.
I'm really going to be sad if mines of narshe doesn't get through... this is a phenomenal song. I see it as part of the collective "introduction to ff6" including opening theme, mines, and awakening, and then the overworld music, which culminates in you meeting your first king. It's like inseparable from the whole experience of playing the game.

FF12 is doing that thing it does to me every year where it starts out modestly forgettable and ends up being my favorite FF soundtrack by the end of round one.

One last vote change for me. Fight 2 (FF4, 37) to Rabanastre Downtown (FF12, 16).

Does absolutely nothing if the 10th voter doesn't show up or votes for Fight 2, and he's got less than a day before I post the results and move on, so we'll see.

Added up all the matches that are locked in. There are 4 that could still swing either way depending on the 10th vote.

Round 1 is complete! Only two brand new entries out of ten will be seeing round 2, but four tracks that had been left warming the qualification bench in 2016 managed to advance on their return. The top-ranked tracks got decimated again this year. In fact, more of the top 15 got knocked out than advanced. The Place I'll Return To Someday (FF9, 14th), Decisive Battle (FF10, 13th), Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 12th), Within the Giant (FF4, 10th), The Decisive Battle (FF6, 9th), Main Theme (FF4, 5th), Opening Theme (FF6, 3rd), and The Extreme (FF8, 2nd) are all packing their bags and getting ready for next year. Lucky for them, the top 12 ranked round 1 eliminations automatically qualify. Unlucky for everyone else who lost, most of the free passes got taken at the top. Walking the Snowy Mountains (FF5, 42nd) will be the first former quarter finalist to have to endure a qualification match.

Underdogs thrived this year, in some pretty dramatic ways. Last year, the two lowest ranked tracks to advance were tied at 111th. This year, eight tracks ranked lower than that, not including new entries, managed to advance. The lowest was Signs of Change (FF12), previously ranked at 140th. It's also worth mentioning that Under Her Control (FF8) finally broke its losing streak. At 90th place, it was the highest ranked track by a large margin to never advance.

Upsets! There was no end to them. The biggest by rank spread was Signs of Change (FF12, 140th) knocking out The Decisive Battle (FF6, 9th). The huge upsets just kept rolling in from there. I can't even list how many songs beat opponents with a 50+ rank advantage over them. But here are a few I found especially noteworthy:
The Extreme (FF8, 2nd) lost to Wailers and Waterwheels (FF14, 97th)
Main Theme (FF4, 5th) lost to The Mines of Narshe (FF6, 82nd)
Within the Giant (FF4, 10th) lost to Fighting Fate (FF13, 128th)
Clash on the Big Bridge (FF5, 12th) lost to Frontier Village Dali (FF9, 62nd)
Decisive Battle (FF10, 13th) lost to Seeking Power (FF12, 76th)

Of course, that doesn't mean that every top tier track got a rough ride. There were no shut-outs in 2016. This year saw two, with Awakened Forest (FF9, 25th) destroying The Hanging Edge (FF13, 140th) 10-0 and last year's champion, Vamo Alla Flamenco (FF9, 8th), wrecking Vivi's Theme (FF9, 40th) 9-0. Dark Messenger (FF9, 4th), Aerith's Theme (FF7, 17th), and The Silence Before the Storm (FF10, 63rd) nearly accomplished the same, with 9-1 or 8-1 wins. When the favored track wasn't losing, it was often winning hard.

Final Fantasy 2 was eliminated in the first round once again, and this year Final Fantasy 1 surprisingly joined it in the loser's circle. FF2 becomes the only game to have been eliminated in round 1 twice. FF3 and FF13 were both knocked out at this stage in 2015.

All-Time Round 1 Performance Stats

Over all, 2017 returned to a more normal outcome of certain games performing very strong and others fairing abysmally. (Last year was unusually even across the board.) Final Fantasy 4 was the biggest surprise, coming in only 7th place with its first sub-500 year. Consequently, Final Fantasy 7 ended 4's three year tenure as the most successful game in the series. Final Fantasy 8 won the year, for the first time. Its previous best was 3rd. FF1's awful showing dropped it in the all-time count from 5th to 7th, and FF10 continued to plow its way up the charts after a rough first two years to move from 9th overall to 6th. FF2 had the second worst showing of any game to date, with only 17.9% of votes in its favor. The only worse turnout was FF13's 11.6% in 2015. Final Fantasy 15 ended its first appearance at 10th for the year and 11th overall.

Okay, this set has some huge contenders in it.

I actually switched my mind on the last 2 a lot. Confound you shad for making me see how beautiful the 12 soundtrack is! (a little comment, I love 12, but a lot of the songs seem to just blend into the background for me. I usually passed off the songs in favor of others, but i've realized that they can be beautiful in their own way and the ones you stick with, are the memorable ones, 12 actually has many memorable songs in it. i'm going to have to listen to the soundtrack again) Even saying that... they got unfairly stacked against this time.

Four games in the series were eliminated in the second round, and they weren't the usual fair. Final Fantasy 3, 5, 11, and 15 were all knocked out. Not only was that quite unusual for 5 and 11, but this happens to be the first year that FF13 and FF14 see a track advance to 32.

Fealty from FF14 is the only brand new entry that's still hanging around.

There were a few major upsets. By the ranking spread, the three biggest were The Skycity of Bhujerba beating Chateau d'Oraguille (77 points), Troops March On beating Ronfaure (99 points), and The Promise beating Valley of the Fallen Star (121 points).

Round 3 is complete!

FF13 and 14 have been eliminated, leaving 4, 6-10, and 12 to duke it out from here. This is the first year that Final Fantasy 12 has reached the round of 16!

Prelude from FF4 has continued its habit of huge votes and early losses. As the points stand right now, it is the 14th most successful song out of 165 participants, but for the fourth year in a row it has failed to advance beyond the round of 32.

Vamo Alla Flamenco becomes the first previous winner to be eliminated, and it was the biggest upset of the round as well. Ranked 8th coming into the year and presently sitting at 3rd, it lost a tie break to The Phon Coast (68th).

The 16 survivors are a bit more traditionally popular than last year. Only four tracks previously outside of the top 50 remain, the lowest being The Mines of Narshe (82nd).

There will be at least three first-time quarter finalists, even before I randomize the match-ups, because only 5 tracks to have achieved that before remain. On we go!

Freya's Theme (FF9, 30) I know that dancing mad will win this but i'm going for the underdog simply because i love this particular theme a lot. it's awesome that it fits freya so well.
Bombing Mission (FF7, 53) No surprises there.
The Mines of Narshe (FF6, 12) Nostalgia speaking there.
The Sight of Spira (FF10, 13) This was a hard match up for me. but i think i'm just voting for the calmness of this song.

Well! As with all previous iterations of this game, there will be a first-time winner. Dancing Mad and Bombing Mission were both eliminated in the round of 16. Eight tracks remain, and one of them will take gold.

A 40-rank gap makes Sight of Spira's win over Devil's Lab the largest upset of the round, and that match-up wasn't even very close. Perhaps a bit more surprising, to me at least, was Phantom Train (19th) falling to Song of Memories (35th). All but Liberi Fatali, Still More Fighting, and The Dreadful Fight are enjoying their first entry in the finals. Those newcomers happen to include One-Winged Angel. About time, eh?

Final Fantasy 12 has been eliminated. 4 and 6-10 all still remain.

The first two aren't hard decisions for me. I know the widespread appeal of Liberi Fatali is more than just nostalgia, because participants who haven't even played FF8 frequently vote it, but I keep on listening and I just don't get what's great about it. Song of Memories is a pretty number, and I've certainly voted for it in the early rounds a time or two, but it doesn't really hold up for me in comparison to say, Home Sweet Home, To Zanarkand, or The Promise. Quite happy to see it reach this stage, but I don't think it's going to earn any more votes from me given the competition.

I never imagined Sight of Spira would ever get this far in a dozen years. I'm so used to hyping it in the round of 128 and watching it lose anyway. Now I'm not sure what to think. Traditionally I think it's a vastly underappreciated track. Will it hold up for me at this tier of competition if it survives the quarter-finals? Hard to say. I voted Devil's Lab over it last round, much to my own surprise.

Then we get into the really tough calls for me. In both cases, the moods are radically different. (I think it would have been a lot more interesting to see Still More Fighting vs The Dreadful Fight and Freya's Theme vs The Mines of Narshe, but I let the dice fall where they may in this game.

It could come down to mood in the moment in both pairings. Two killer battle tracks vs two much more mood-setting pieces. I definitely could see myself flipping either way on both of these from one week to the next, but maybe I'd be more consistent than I think. Freya's Theme captures everything I loved about FF9. A sort of outdoorsy, exploration tune--the harpsichord in it always gave it this imagery of crisp morning air setting into your lungs with a vast world around you. Yeah, I think I was always going that way in this pairing, as much as I love Still More Fighting.

The last one... Yikes. It ultimately feels like an easier choice for me, but the fact that I can't put a feeling on why tells me I could feel the exact opposite this time tomorrow. Consider that the vote most likely to move before this round ends.

Irrelevant to the current round but something I thought I'd note, the track that has grown on me the most this year is Theme of Tantalus. One of the great things about this game is that every year I fall in love with more and more tracks that I never really latched onto before. It also makes the choices harder every time I run this.

Well, for all that this year has been more back to the basics with strong tracks winning more often than not, the quarter-finals saw a lot of shake-ups. Three out of four statistical underdogs won. While One-Winged Angel (43rd) was more of an underperformer than a true underdog, and Sight of Spira (76th) and Song of Memories (35th) were both unexpected contenders at this stage, The Mines of Narshe (82nd) defeat of two-time quarter-finalist The Dreadful Fight (26th) was just a straight upset.

As the rand would have it, both Final Fantasy 7 battle tracks will be facing the lighter fair to see whether we get an all FF7 combat final or something quite different.

Results are never actually randomized. Ties go to the underdog as determined by which track had a lower all-time rank coming into the competition.

Once or twice I had to do a second level tie break of which track was ranked lower at that stage in the present competition.

I never knew that. I thought you used Rand too :)

I use Rand on my game, unless the characters are from the same game in the series (eg Auron vs Zidane, both from FF9). Until it becomes impossible to split them up, but that rarely happens :)

The match-ups are completely random with a condition that the same two tracks never square off in the qualifiers, first, or second round twice (to avoid hard luck forcing the same song to face something like Dancing Mad in the first round three times). Each round is distinct in that regard, meaning you could theoretically face the same song in each round once, just never twice in the same.

The results of a tie are not random.

Final Fantasy 2017 Finals

Still More Fighting (FF7) has absolutely dominated this tournament, and that should come as no surprise. Entering ranked 10th all-time, it has been a perennial contender in this game with the one lone exception of a first-round knockout in the original 2014 run. In a year where most of the top 10 saw early elimination, it took on a strong opponent in 14th-ranked The Place I'll Return to Someday out the gate and won decisively, 7-2. Balamb Garden, ranked 91st, and Find Your Way, ranked 23rd, both proceeded to fall 8-2 before the track showed any sign of wavering. And even then, 7-4 was a pretty clean victory over 6th all-time and 2015 champion Bombing Mission. In the quarter-finals it faced Freya's Theme, ranked 27th, and things got interesting. The two songs were dead even at a 4-4 tie with Freya's Theme set to win the tie-break before two late votes propelled it to a 6-4 victory. The Sight of Spira (76th) readily rolled over and died 9-1 in the semis to guarantee Still More Fighting its first appearance in a final. Over all, the average rank of its opponents was 39--the second toughest path to a Final on record after Ronfaure's 38 last year. No matter the outcome, it will end the year in 2nd place all-time behind Dancing Mad.

One-Winged Angel (FF7). In contrast, One-Winged Angel had the statistically easiest run on record at a 70 average, 3 points lighter than Bombing Mission faced in 2015. (And that didn't stop Bombing Mission from winning.) Quite the opposite of its opponent, the song has an established history of underperformance reflected in its rank: 43rd coming into the tournament. It got an easy pass in the first round, knocking out Dear Friends 8-2. It cleanly defeated a more formidable opponent in 25th-ranked Awakened Forest 7-2 before struggling against 121st-ranked Succession of Witches 6-4. After another easy 8-3 win over 48th-ranked Besaid Island, it nearly met its match in the quarter-finals. 30th-ranked Liberi Fatali handed it a 5-5 draw, which One-Winged Angel won on the tie-break. The semi-finals, on the other hand, came fairly easy. An 8-2 win against 82nd-ranked The Mines of Narshe paved the way for a first-time finals appearance. Should the song receive no further votes, it will end the year in 9th place all-time.

In an all Final Fantasy VII combat theme final, Still More Fighting knocks out One-Winged Angel 7-4 to become the 2017 champion.

Still More Fighting was also this year's point leader with a record 52, moving it from 10th place to 2nd and impressively close to Dancing Mad all-time. A good showing from all three past champions has left our four winners in the top four all-time slots--something I don't expect we'll see again for a while. The tournament as a whole also saw the most votes ever by a huge margin with 1231, compared to 831 in 2014, 806 in 2015, and 1017 in 2016.

One-Winged Angel had an outstanding 46 point run, ending its three year drought at 8th all-time.

The Dreadful Fight had a grand turnout by votes despite elimination in the quarter-finals. At 36 points, it finished third for the tournament and brought in enough votes to have won the game in 2014 or 2015.

And Vamo Alla Flamenco remains the only track I've voted for in a final that actually won. ;)
