Welcome to my seventh annual Final Fantasy Character knockout game! I have 128 characters, from Final Fantasy I to Final Fantasy XV, and Final Fantasy Tactics all meshed in and spat out to form battles. Who will be victorious?

Due to the ruling on the 5th Annual Games that the winner from the previous year will take the next year off, so this year we say goodbye to Rydia from Final Fantasy 4, and welcome back Kefka from Final Fantasy 6!

Also as stated last year and in another thread I did a few weeks ago, we've removed quite a few characters to make room for 9 new characters from the newest instalment of the series - Final Fantasy XV!

So with Rydia out and Kefka back and nine new FF15 characters in as well who is going to win this year? Next to each character I've put down the game they appeared in, followed by position each character is in tally wise, and their votes tally from the result of both years as well. In Round 2 onwards I'll also post their total tally this year. This is all for information purposes, if you're a statistical nerd like me. If that doesn't make sense, here's what Rydia's name would look like, if she were playing this year:

We added in some characters two years ago to freshen things up, so these characters will remain highlighted in blue to give them a bit of love, mainly because they are still quite new to the games due to being introduced later than everyone else so are still quite low on the rankings! The nine FF15 characters will be highlighted in red as well, to also highlight them for the same reasons.

If you haven't played any of my FF Knockout Games in the past, here are the rules:

The Rules
1. To vote, simply check who is going against who and reply with your favourite character in each roundup, preferably in a column format.
2. When a round finishes, if there are any tiebreakers, I'll post them up at the end. Tiebreakers are to be decided by listing them, and asking the question again about who is their favourite, the first response wins the tiebreak (eg. if the tiebreaker was Kefka vs Cloud, and the first poster to respond chooses Kefka, Kefka goes through to the next round).
3. All these battles are chosen randomly, I've used a simple Excel spreadsheet and the "Rand" formula to help me make it fair and square. The only exceptions I've made is that there's no two characters from the same game going against eachother. I'm going to try and keep characters from the same games apart for as long as possible, although that may get difficult later.
4. I'll keep these rounds open for around a week before posting the next one.
5. Because Round 1 has 64 battles, I'll split it into four sections (so you'll see 16 battles today, 16 in the next update etc). Round 2 will have 32 battles and I'll split that into two sections. Round 3 onwards will be posted in the complete forms.
6. Don't take this seriously, it's just a bit of fun. By all means debate why you love or hate certain characters, just be respectful of others feelings of those same characters.

Literally I use the "RAND" formula on Excel and give all the characters a number from 1-128 and pair them up that way. The only exception is having two characters from the same game facing each other, unless that can't be avoided towards the end of the game :)

Most Popular Characters - 9 characters lead the way so far, with 6 points, but obviously this will open out as the game goes forward. I'll list them in Round 2 onwards due to how many people "lead" at the moment.

Most Popular Characters (All Time) � The Top 10 is unchanged, Auron still leads the way with Vivi in pursuit,and Zidane is a bit further back in 3rd place. Locke from FF4 has just pipped Gilgamesh from FF5 into 11th place, after Gilgamesh had a horror tournament.

Lowest Drop in All Time Rankings � Edea from FF8 had a brutal result against Shadow from FF6, not getting a single vote. She�s gone down 10 rankings as a result, from 39th to 49th place. She may go further down the rankings yet as the game progresses.

Highest Rise in All Time Rankings � The Emperor from FF2 had probably his best round in six years, getting all six votes from a matchup with Marilith from FF1. He�s risen from 85th to 73rd place so far, a whopping twelve places. Six years ago he finished in 24th place, can he win your support more this year?

Centenarians - If you didn't know, we have five Centenarians - characters who have over the years of this game have accumulated 100+ points. They were Auron from FF10, Zidane, Vivi and Beatrix from FF9, Laguna from FF8 , Terra and Edgar from FF6 and Rydia from FF4. But we have our next Centenarian � congratulations to Kefka! He probably would have joined the club last year, but he took the year our after winning the 5th game. The closest to 100 points would then be Squall, but he only accumulated a single point this year, so he�s stuck for another year on 99! Next in line is Locke from FF4, but he�ll need another 7 points this year to join the elite club.

"Biggest Upsets" � As hinted at earlier, Squall is the highest rank casualty in this year�s game at this stage, initially ranked 10th place, he lost to 20th place Kimahri. In terms of �big� as in ranks, 11th place ranked Gilgamesh from FF5 got demolished 4-1 by 93rd place ranked Stiltzkin from FF9, a massive 82 places between them!

I certainly don't mind voting all the tie breaks in the future, I just figured it would be more fair to pick a few and pass the torch to someone else.

If you're disappointed with the turn-out, you could try extending it to a second forum. I pulled in another two voters for the music game the last two years doing that. Could have probably nabbed more if I worked it, but I like having the game in that 7-9 voter range. Prevents obvious favorites from being guaranteed to dominate every year while still forcing the winning track to pull in a decent chunk of votes and not just get lucky. (And it keeps it so FFShrine still has the bulk of the say in who wins.)

A lot of tough ones in this round. I wonder what will change in future years if I do get around to replaying them.

Round 2 Roundup

Most Popular Characters – Kefka of FF6 is the only character to get 11 points at this stage of the game so far so he leads a pack of seven characters with 10 points. I would name them but… laziness!

Most Popular Characters (All Time) – There's some subtle changes in the Top 10, namely Terra of FF6 has gone down a rank to join Beatrix of FF9 at fifth place, Edgar of FF6 has overtaken Laguna of FF8 into seventh place following another disappointing tournament for the latter (he's just been knocked out). And finally Kefka has replaced Rydia of FF4 into eighth place, the latter of course, taking the year out due to winning the whole tournament last year.

Lowest Drop in All Time Rankings – As mentioned in the Round 1 roundup Edea of FF8 has gone down 10 places so far, she hasn’t actually dropped further yet but Fran of FF12 has now dropped 12 ranks, she also got no points in this years game and she’s gone from 55th place to 67th.

Highest Rise in All Time Rankings – The Emperor from FF2 rose twelve places in Round 1, but didn’t register a single vote in Round 2 and is knocked out. There’s a new high-riser in the name of Rafa from FF Tactics, his eight points so far has brought him from 99th place to 85th. He’s still in the game so can he go any higher?

Centenarians - Locke from FF4, was next in line to join the 100+ point club but he got knocked out too! So did Cid from FF7 and Shadow from FF6! So next in line now is Celes from FF6, who has 88 points, so has to probably get to the semifinals or finals to make it this year.

"Biggest Upsets" – Laguna is definitely the biggest upset at this stage of the game, in fact, there’s a lack of love for The Man With the Machine Gun over the last two years, he’s only had 6 points in total! He lost to newcomer Lunafreya from FF15. In terms of rankings, it’s also the biggest defeat. If we’re talking of the characters that aren’t “new”, then Lulu of FF10 losing her tiebreaker to Dycedarg of FF Tactics was pretty shocking, ranked 30th, she was a massive 77 rankings ahead of him!

Round 3 Roundup

Most Popular Characters – Beatrix of FF9 now leads the way with Kefka of FF6 being a shock elimination in the last round. She has 14 points so far. Behind her with 13 points are Terra and Ultros of FF6, Quina from FF9 and Aeris and Red XIII from FF7.

Most Popular Characters (All Time) – No changed from the last round in the Top 10, but Ultros is the highest mover closer to the top of the rankings. He's gone from 22nd to 18th, and may be on course to having his best tournament yet, but that's for you to decide!

Lowest Drop in All Time Rankings – We have two different characters now who have dropped the lowest in the rankings in Semih Lafihna of FF11 and Chaos of FF1. After getting zero points in this year's game, they've both dropped from 81st to 94th place, 13 places down in the rankings.

Highest Rise in All Time Rankings – Again a new person takes this crown thus far in Red XIII, a "blue" character, which means he only joined three years ago. He's having his best tournament so far in getting 13 points, and as a result has gone up 26 places, from 107th place to 81st. If we're talking about characters that aren't "new", then The Emperor did the best, going up 12 places so far as mentioned in Round 1.

Centenarians - As stated in the last round, a lot of early shock eliminations means that Celes is favourite to become the next centenarian. She's still active, on 91 points, so she has 9 points to go. Can she get far enough in the tournament to reach the mark?

"Biggest Upsets" – Vivi being eliminated is probably the biggest shock, the three time winner lost to Cid of FF Tactics, someone ranked 35 places lower than him. It's his worst performance since the First Games. In terms of highest/lowest ranking upsets, Red XIII of FF7 losing to Faris of FF5 can be argued as the biggest, a massive 61 places separated them. But, as stated earlier, Red XIII is a newer character so you could argue the result isn't that shocking.

There are no FF15 characters left now. Also, props up to FF Tactics, they have 4 characters still left in the tournament, this is the first time they've had more than 1 character reach Round 4, never mind actually having 4 characters reach the last 16! There are also 4 FF6 and 4 FF9 characters left.

Most Popular Characters – Beatrix is still leading this year’s competition with 18 points. Terra has now cemented 2nd place with 17 points, and there’s a couple of characters with 16 points.
Most Popular Characters (All Time) – Celes has moved into 13th place from 14th place other than that, nothing really to report. I might move this section out starting from next year because very little moves at the top of the rankings really nowadays, after doing this for seven years!
Lowest Drop in All Time Rankings – Semih Lafihna and Chaos have now taken over the crown again, they’ve now gone down 13 places each in the rankings.
Highest Rise in All Time Rankings – Red XIII has definitely raised up the rankings the most this year, he’s moved up 30 rankings now. Of the characters that are not “blue”, Rafa has now moved the most, he’s gone up 12 rankings as The Emperor has been pipped slightly again (still, 11 rankings up is pretty cool).
Centenarians – As stated in the last round Celes is favourite to becoming the new Centenarian, and she’s still going strong in the competition, she’s on 95 points now so a good showing in the Quarter Finals and Semi Finals should get her there, but she needs your votes!
"Biggest Upsets" – Red XIII beating Ultros again is considered the biggest upset when it comes to rankings, a massive 85 places separated them. But again, with Red XIII being a “newer” character, is it considered an upset? If we’re not counting that, Cid from FF Tactics beating Zidane of FF9, is a massive shock, 43 places separate them!

Before we go on to the next section – I’d like to mention Auron from FF10 has been knocked out in a tiebreaker. He was our #1 ranked character and has been for around two years now. He’s also the only character to get to the Quarter Final in EVERY tournament. Until now! Massive shock!

It's Quarter Final Time! At this point in the competition we start to remove the statistics and talk more about who's left and how they've done in the past. Please welcome, the Top 8!

Beatrix – Honorable General Beatrix is one of the most popular female characters in the tournament. She made it to the Quarter Finals in the first three years, all in a row. But since then, she’s failed to make it this far since. Now she’s back in the QFs, can she make it to the Semis? She’s gotten there twice before so it certainly can happen again!

Celes – This is Celes’, second quarter final, and in a row too! Last year she finished as runner up, in an all-female final to Rydia from FF4. With Rydia out of this year’s tournament, can she make it all the way?

Cid – This is Cid’s first Quarter Final! FF Tactics have done exceptionally well this year, compared to other years anyway. No FF Tactics character has made the Quarter Finals before and now we have three! Clearly this is the best Cid has done, the best he did before was his first tournament, when he finished 30th. He’s in the Top 8, but can he go even further and surprise more people?

Ovelia – FF Tactics have had a lot of love this year, and this is Ovelia’s first Quarter Final. In fact, the best she ever did before this year was get to Round 3 and finish 25th place. She’s a massive underdog this year, how far can she go?

Quina – This is Quina’s second Quarter Final, and along with Celes, it’s two in a row. He/she got the bronze award last year, doing remarkably well. Can he/she get to the Semis two years in a row? Or maybe even win the whole thing? Only you can decide!

Ramza – The most consistent Final Fantasy Tactics player we’ve had in the last seven years, but he has never made it into the Quarter Finals… until now! What a tournament FF Tactics characters have had. Three Semi Finalists! And with Ramza being the “favourite” among the characters from that game, does that make him a bubbling underdog favourite? We’ll find out!

Red XIII – Being one of the newer characters introduced into the games three years ago, this is his first Quarter Final. He’s only the second “blue” character to get this far, after Sabin from FF6 did it last year. Despite being the lowest ranked character left in the tournament, he’s still a wildcard, being a newer, fresher character. With your support he can be the first “blue” character to get to the Semis!

Terra - This is Terra's fourth Quarter Final, and also four in a row. She missed out on the Semis last year and has only got there once before. She’s also now the highest ranked character left in the game, with Auron, Vivi and Zidane having shock exits. With your support she can get to the Semis again!

hmmmmmmmmm.... interesting pairings! The only characters of the lot that I was pretty much always going to vote for were Terra and Cid, unless they got stuck head to head in which case ............., but they didn't.

Beatrix vs Ramza is the toughest one for me. I thoroughly enjoyed FF9, but the characters didn't stick around in my memory the way they have in other games. I remember really liking Beatrix, but not much as to why. Ramza I frequently support as the central character to Tactics, but it was more the cast around him that made the game so intriguing, in my opinion. A vote for him feels more like a vote for the game than a vote for the character in it. I think I'm going to vote Beatrix for now but might switch if Cid fairs poorly.

Beatrix and Red XIII are some of my all-time favorite characters throughout the series, so I'm really happy to see them this far. As far as Quina goes, I think it's great to see a character that a lot of people seem to dislike and find useless make it to the QFs two years now!

It was such a close battle, that in a few days I've changed my mind. I can't eliminate Beatrix.... Sorry Ramza:/

A few notes before I reveal the Semi Final pairings...

- It may have been obvious but we're going to crown a new winner this year. All previous champions fell in Round 3 or earlier, a terrible showing for all ex-champs!
- We do have three characters that have been in this position before in Terra from FF6, Quina from FF9 and Beatrix from FF9.
- Beatrix is the only character left that's now a three time Semi Finalist.
- We had no characters from FF Tactics get to the Quarter Finals before and now we have one in the Semis! It's been a great year for them.

For me it's another very easy decision. I've ALWAYS been a huge Beatrix fan. I've always had a weird crush on her too... I'd love to play a prequel of FF9 that concentrates on her... that would be awesome!

At 1st, I wanted to vote for Beatrix, because I like her better. But then I realised it migth be the only chance for FFT character to ever win this, since none has even got to the quarter final before... Go Orlandu, go where no Cid has ever been!

Statistics after the Seventh Annual Final Fantasy Character Knockout Game
-Beatrix of FF9 is our fifth winner and also marks the longest streak of new winners we've had since the games began.
-She is our second female winner after Rydia last year. Two women win two years in a row, it's definitely a woman's world at the moment!
-Despite still never winning a tournament Auron from FF10 is still at the top of the rankings, in fact the Top 3 hasn't changed for over 2 years now.
-As stated earlier Cid from FF Tactics is our lowest ranked finalist, being ranked 46th as of the start of the 7th games. He does now rank 34th as of the end of the games.
-Rydia from FF4 started her honeymoon ranked 8th place, she's only lost the one ranking in that time.
-Rikku from FF10 continues her trend of ranking worse year upon year, she's gone from 17th to 19th, to 29th, to 39th, to 42nd to last year she was 43rd and now she'll rank 46th.
-Rydia aside the highest ranked character not to register a single vote this year is Edea from FF8. She was ranked 39th and as a result has dropped to 51st.
-Squall from FF8 was the highest ranked character not to get to Round 2. Despite this he hasn't changed his position in the rankings, remaining in 10th place.
-As stated earlier the highest climb of the rankings is Red XIII, who was previously ranked at 107th and now is placed in 71st, a huge 36 places. That being said he is still one of the "newer" characters.
-Out of the characters that have been here since Day 1, we have two characters that have risen 12 places. One is our runner up, Cid from FF Tactics, who has gone from 46th to 34th. The other is Rafa, also from FF Tactics, who has gone from 99th place to 87th.
-Two characters share the coveted "worst drop in rankings" award this year. They are both Chaos from FF1 and Semih Lefihna from FF11, both we ranked 81st place and have both gone down 13 places down to 94th.
-Two characters also have not registered a single point in two years in a row now! They are Fran from FF12, who is ranked 67th now. The other is Niellefresne from FF14, who is now ranked 120th. Give them some love next year!
-This year we had 730 votes in the game, which is down 892 last year. One of the reason behind that is we have 6 less characters to vote for compared to last year but also general interest is down. If you guys know of other people on the forums that may be interested in this format of game, let them know we'll be here end of April/start of May next year again! Good luck! I attempted this myself last year after seeing ProJared was planning on doing it. I played 1 all the way through, gave up on II and watched speed runs of II and III, played through IV, V, and VI, then gave up again after the cross-dressing fetch quest in VII. Keep us posted.

Leveling in II is a huuuuuuuge pain in the ass and you have to replace one of your characters with the equivalent of a level 1 dude right before the final dungeon. But I can't quit that far in. Played 1 and 2 on the Game Boy Advance SP, got an English translation ROM of the original NES FF3 lined up after this.

The leveling system is why I've never gotten far in FFII. I've come to terms with the fact that I'll never beat that game.

What I did for leveling up quick(I played the ROM version btw, for all the games from 2-6), is once you get the Change spell or whatever it was that lets you swap stats with another character or monster is use it to swap stats with a low level monster and it'll boost your stats since you only get beefed up when you're low. Unfortunately it doesn't help with leveling up your spells, there's no way around that, but you can get the Aero spell early in the game if you go into the...was it forest or desert? above near where you start...will have to check a map, it's been so long, but one of the strong(to you at that point) magic users you fight will drop it if you beat them. That's the only thing I hated 'bout II(well, there were a few things, but that was the most annoying) was having to level up the spells. And the real FF3 is probably my second favorite in the whole series(after FFX).

Yeah I did the sap goblin trick on Leon to get him out of utter uselessness stage and then I just let the rest grind itself--MP caps pretty quickly and I'd get in fights against mobs that can't touch me, set two characters to dump spells on my party and two others to cure, come back in an hour, rinse and repeat 16 times. Not terribly time consuming in a hands-on sense but tedious as hell. That was on GBA. In hindsight I regret playing both 1 and 2 as NES ROMs because in the absence of retro appeal they were very lacking.

FF3 I emulated on NES and it was delightful. Really felt like the true FF prototype game to me moreso than 1 or 2. There was at least some semblance of personality to the characters (besides the actually playable ones haha); the influence on 4 and 5 was really obvious; the music kicked it up a notch; there was an actual challenge to the fights without being tedious; exploration seemed to hit that sweet spot between force-fed directions and ambiguous open space where you felt like you were going somewhere on your own but you never really had to stop and go "hmmm what do I need to do next". It was by far my favorite of the original 3.

Playing my way through 4 now (settled on the original SNES translation after reading a lot of comparisons between my options). 4-10 I played when they were released, so it's more of a nostalgia experience than a novelty, but I'm really pleasantly surprised to find 4 as good as I remembered it so far.

Oh the only thing I really loved 'bout 2(when I finally bought the Final Fantasy Origins set but still prefer the emulator because I can save/load at any time) was the FMV opening sequence...it was AWESOME!!! When Leon saves Maria by kicking some demon soldier ass, then starts to get ambushed and Frioniel(hated the names though) threw his dagger into the one demon solder's eye to save Leon and it turned to look at him and his other one hit it in the throat and knocked it down, that was the best fight scene I had seen in ages...of course that meant Frioniel was now faced with an demon army without any weapons which is pretty stupid, but hey, it was still cool!

Quickly posting on here - I'm happy to go ahead with a 2018 edition of this game but the website has so much spam/adverts/potential malware or virus problems that I'm barely able to post, if the admins actually take control of the site I'm happy to post the game, if not, then I may have to retire it... :(

For what it's worth, it appears as though the issue is fixed. I've tried logging out a few times and I'm not getting any ad spam. I can't promise it will work that way for you, but I think it's possible they finally resolved it.

It seems to be fixed now... even month after month after month it just wouldn't work properly for me, but this is the first time I can post with zero problems. Huzzah!
