Shin (“New”) Omizu no Hanamichi

"Shin Omizu no Hanamichi" was the 2001 sequel to 1999’s "Omizu no Hanamichi" (in Japanese “Shin” means “New”). Like the original TV series, the sequel follows the lives of a group of female hostesses working at "Paradise", a upscale nightclub in the trendy Roppongi district of Tokyo, with many actresses reprising their roles. Oshima did the music for both series and offers a pleasant potpourri of dramatic and light music. The music for the original series is more fun, as by the time the sequel takes place the gals face uncertain futures due to the possible closing of the nightclub.

Shin Omizu no Hanamichi: 12 tracks on UMCK-1030. Released in 2001.

TRIVIA: A friend who helps me translate Japanese booklets made it very clear that a nightclub hostess in Japan is not only a desirable job for its high pay, but is considered respectable too. Hostesses are basically paid to party with the wealthy men who enter the clubs and entertain them with songs, dances, and conversation. There may be flirting involved, but seldom sex. Both TV series starred Naomi Zaizen as the most popular hostess at the Paradise nightclub. Interestingly, in the 2011 TV series, "Misaki #1", Zaizen stars as a high school teacher who tries to hide her past as a nightclub hostess, a twist that suggests changing attitudes about young women choosing hostess as a career.

Oshima also did the music for the TV series “Misaki #1”, which can be found here: Thread 195081

Thank you very much, yepsa, for continuing to share these Oshima works. I've not seen a single one of these TV or film productions. I have only come to know Oshima through your introduction, and the music is consistently a lovely little surprise :)
