Hi,

after long time listening with Foobar2000 and the HDCD plugin via my Denon DA-300USB DAC and now with a Parasound DAC-1100HD and my Harman Kardon CD-player it is time to make a most complete listing of CDs that are HDCD encoded. But for this I need help from you! Please post the information here and I will complete the list. And I hope this tread will be a stickey. Please send the mods an PM, when you like this! If you have an CD listed here, but as an other release country, please post the reference number!

What is HDCD?
As compared to conventional CD's, HDCD-encoded CDs can sound markedly superior for two reasons: First of all the superb sonic quality provided by the Pacific Microsonics A-D converters which still to this day are considered by many to be the finest sounding A-D converters ever made. And it should be noted here that the Pacific Microsonics A-D converters are the only A-D converters designed to encode HDCD. In addition HDCD-encoded CD's can also sound better because they are encoded with 20 bits of real musical information, as compared with 16 bits for all other CD's. From a theoretical technical perspective, at 6db of dynamic range per bit, a 20 bit recording has 24db more dynamic range than a 16 bit recording.

HDCD overcomes the limitation of the 16-bit CD format by using a sophisticated system to encode the additional 4 bits onto the CD while remaining completely compatible with the existing CD format. As they are 20-bit recordings, HDCD-encoded CD's can provide more dynamic range, a more focused 3-D soundstage, and noticeably more natural vocal and musical timbre. With an HDCD-encoded CD, you get more of the body, depth, and emotion of the original performance—rather than what is more typical which is a flatter, more "digital" imitation.

When an engineer is using a Pacific Microsonics for analog-digital conversion there are also some minor HDCD-encoding options which can be utilized such as Low-Level Extension and Peak Extend. But in practice these options are seldom used—and even when utilized the resulting difference is subtle at best.

Notice: All recordings contributed by me are in my collection and if it is an digital download it is checked for the HDCD signal.

Is there really a huge difference between a normal CD and a HDCD..?

Ooh yes, it is. But you need an CD-Player with HDCD decoder, or an DAC with HDCD or use Foobar2000 with the HDCD plugin connected to an DAC of you choice.

Still don't think I'd get the difference.

Is there really a huge difference between a normal CD and a HDCD..?

Usually, no. Parts of the HDCD encoding/decoding have always been fake. 20 bit? Not true. 17 bit would be more like it (and those are only achieved by lowering overall gain by 6 dB to create headroom for possible peak extension). The rest is just fancy noise shaped dithering noise. Oh, and the quality of the A/D converters of the Model I and Model II converters has long been surpassed by more advanced technology. After all, those converters are now more than 20 years old. Which is a lot. They were still used 10 years ago for their unique sound signature, not because they were that good.

However, in case Peak Extend and Low Level Gain Adjustment were used, the decoded music might sound decidedly different. Sadly, those discs were in the minority.

But I still wanted to add other HDCDs:

Dreamcatcher, James Newton Howard, Varese, 2003
War Of The Worlds, John Williams, Decca (Universal), 2005
Star Wars Episode III, John Williams, Sony Classical, 2005
Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban, John Williams, Warner Bros. Pictures, 2004

All of those discs are not marked, nor do they use any special features like Peak Extend or LLGA. It seems that the A/D converter was used without any HDCD-specific switch (the light still lights up but the decoder doesn't use any specific decoding).
The Mummy Returns, Alan Silvestri, Decca (Universal), 2001

(and those are only achieved by lowering overall gain by 6 dB to create headroom for possible peak extension).

So you're saying that the peaks can be essentially the same on HDCD as on a normal CD, only the rest of the music is lowered to create the perceived effect that the peaks have in fact been extended? (I don't understand or know any of these engineering terms too well... so sorry if what I asked makes no sense. :o)

Thanks for the information, CDs are added!

So you're saying that the peaks can be essentially the same on HDCD as on a normal CD, only the rest of the music is lowered to create the perceived effect that the peaks have in fact been extended? (I don't understand or know any of these engineering terms too well... so sorry if what I asked makes no sense. :o)

Well, the gain of the music is lowered by 6 dB when a HDCD encoded disc is discovered. In some cases, the engineer used peak extend, in other cases the engineer didn't. The gain lowering 'feature' of HDCD is a therefore a necessity and part of the process. It wasn't constructed to fool customers. In case peak extend was used it actually offered a benefit, turning a loudness war release into one that has peaks and transients intact.

After a nice conversation via PM with SonicAdventure we decided to delete "War of the Worlds", "Star Wars Episode III" and "Dreamcatcher" from the list. It seems that these recordings are not propper HDCD encoded.

WRT HDCD one should also notice:
In many cases, HDCD signaling is present in the subcode, but none of the HDCD features was actually turned on. This is because many such mediums were mastered on HDCD capable equipment which always set the signaling, even if HDCD wasn't really activated.

Also, in recent ffmpeg versions there is HDCD support :)

I searched through my soundtrackcollection and found these HDCD-titles too:

The X-files: Fight The Future - Mark Snow - Elektra - 7559-62217-2 - no logo*
Ghosts From The Past - Marc Shaiman - Columbia - 487226 2 - no logo
Snake Eyes - Ryuichi Sakamoto - Hollywood Records/Edel Records - 0121552HWR - no logo*
The Straight Story - Angelo Badalamenti - Windham Hill - 01934 11513 2 - no logo*

No logo's on both in-/outside, but my Denon HDCD-player recognized them as HDCD.
* are also confirmed on this HDCD-soundtracklist: http://www.goodwinshighend.com/music/hdcd/hdcd_recordings_soundtrack.htm

Thanks for doing this list! I've spent months researching the HDCD technology (or, as I like to call it, "HeaDache CD"), and I always make sure that an HDCD has Peak Extension. bonesmania, you spelled Timecode "Timcode". HydrogenAudio has a great new list of HDCD's (http://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=List_of_HDCD-encoded_Compact_Discs), complete with information on whether or not they have PE.

Now, here are some soundtracks that I have found to be true HDCDs with PE:

Movies:
Neil Young - Dead Man
Neil Young - Theme From Dead Man (three track single)
Ben Charest - Les Triplettes de Belleville

Video games:
Jack Wall - Myst III: Exile

Anime:
Yasushi Ishii - Hellsing: Raid
Yasushi Ishii - Hellsing: Ruins

Damn, during some seconds I've read SACD instead of HDCD... shame, I was like WTF there's so much score in SACD format that I've missed but... sadly not :( we can do a SACD thread but it will be even shorter that is useless...
