I listened to it a few times with Windows Groove Music. But the files are DRM'ed due to the music pass. Gears 1+2+3 was way better than the last one. Very very generic and no reuse of the previous themes at all.

Absolutely not true, it is on the contrary very thematic and nearly every cue is distinctive. It's also incredibly badass, which is a word I use very rarely with action driven videogame scores.

I am just not a fan of Ramin Djawadi. His instrumentation is always empty and dry and not epic. And his string ostinatos for action music usually go nowhere. I also hated his Warcraft score. He wrote a few good main themes like for Game Of Thrones; I give hem that. Balfe and Jablonsky are usually in the same league but they usually have better buildup and orchestration.

You're not the only one who feels that way. I took a few listens to the album over the course of the day and I just wasn't a fan of Djawadi's work here. I was considering purchasing the album beforehand and sharing it, but now I'm having second thoughts on that.

Yeah I am playing the game. Awesome old school campaign. The music in the game is also mostly very much in the back. No heroics or epic musical moments. It feels like there are 3 tracks. Brooding and exploring ambient track, battle violin-goes-dum-da-dum track and "this is an emotional moment" track

Well, I know the actual game reuses old themes. Themes from Gears one play in part of the flashback mission.
