Greetings, programs and happy Friday! Been working on this one for the past few days.
I made this version a few years ago, but it kinda sucked and needed a lossless upgrade.
So finally, I'm proud to present everyone the film mix one of my favorite film scores of all time.
First and foremost, this edit would not have been possible without Metrotokyo.
5 years ago, he flawlessly ripped the Blu-ray of the entire film and made his custom version.
While I derived all the film versions from his edit, it is in no way the same thing.
His version is the complete score including all versions of all cues.
A custom compilation of everything available that was written and recorded.
My version is literally the entire soundtrack heard as it is in the film - including source cues.

While this is basically another of my top-notch film mixes, it has one difference from all the others:
it includes dialogue and SFX sprinkled throughout. This was intentional, I didn't do it to cut corners.
I always loved hearing Jeff Bridges in "The Grid",
so I figured I'd continue with that and add some others things here and there.
In my humble opinion, I feel that it really works and only adds to the listening experience.
So don't turn this down, give it a try before you look at it and say "I don't like it" before trying it.
Don't be the child who turns down food before they've ever had it :p


Format is 16-bit, 44.1kHz ALAC.

You'll often hear people say the music can tell a story on it's own. Yet, the music in films are there to help with the story being presented. To have a compromise between both is a brilliant concept, especially since we've had a well received version prior that is only the pure music.

The Interstellar edits with sfx are great. It's pivotal to the experience.

I think we get too spoiled with sessions and complete final_mix scores here.
Not that those should end, but they help a lot.

This is true, I do need to live up to my reputation. I'm just not as familiar with Star Wars as other people around these parts are. All the film mixes I've done - I know those scores like the back of my hand. I'm not likely to jump into a project where I don't know the material that well.

7 films is a lot to work with and learn.

Not to mention, it might be treading on different waters as there's the Audiophile edit for TES.
Some might find it blasphemy to do any edit that isn't that.

The nice thing about the film mixes DaK works on, is that they're mostly newer films.

The OT for Star Wars is dated with so many re-releases, you would not only have to know the film, but find out which versions are the best to work with.
Some just have a very limited source for quality, so not a lot can be done for some tracks.

You stand a better chance tackling the PT instead.

Hey DAKoftheOTA, thanks for sharing this and for your time and effort putting it together, I enjoyed listening to it. Since you mentioned you included dialogue and SFX, I was expecting something similar to what was done with the Star Wars - A Musical Journey soundtrack, and it certainly was evocative of that. Back when I put together my version, I actually thought about doing something similar to create alternate tracks that included those lines of dialogue from the film that were particularly iconic or memorable when paired with their accompanying musical passages, and I think you captured that pretty well overall.

The one critique I'd offer is that at least for me, since I'm listening primarily to enjoy the score, unless the SFX or dialogue are an integral part of the scene that really complements the score, I find it pulls me out of enjoying the music and, especially with the SFX, creates an auditory dissonance that the dialogue on its own does not. I say that because if it were the dialogue and SFX I really wanted to listen to and not the score, I'd just watch the movie, right?

For example, I get why you'd want to include all of the dialogue for Bedtime Story, though I could do without the background sounds, but with the Throne Room and Fireworks/C.L.U. Crowd Intro tracks, I thought the inclusion of all of the dialogue and SFX made it less enjoyable as a musical presentation as the score is virtually crowded out, and thought they might benefit from some more judicious editing focusing on just the core dialogue rather than the entire sequence with SFX. Of course, I don't know what that particular scene means to you, though, so I'm sure you have your own reasons for wanting to present it that way.

One thing I was curious about was why you chose to include certain lines of dialogue in different tracks and not others. Personally, I think I would have included things like Flynn asking "Ever hopped a freight train?" before Solar Sailer, or C.L.U. telling Castor "Enjoy the drink," or "End of line, man!" in Enjoy the Drink, or other similar moments from the film.

One example of what I think is a great inclusion of SFX that adds more presence to the tracks, is where you mixed in Flynn's power-down SFX at the end of Party Crashers bridging to Flynn Drops In, which fits perfectly, and which I was really tempted to do back with my v1 set years ago too.

Anyway, thanks again for sharing your take on one of my all-time favorite scores. I'm gonna have to go watch the film again now. It's a crying shame Disney pulled the plug on the sequel. I was really looking forward to hearing another Daft Punk/Trapanese masterpiece collaboration.

Actually, I didn't see where you got the film audio from.
It's not mentioned in the first post.

Was it a bluray rip?
Audacity and Audition don't open lossless DTS, they open the lossy core.
The movie is 7.1, so opening in Audition should open it as 5.1 instead, which means the lossy core was read instead of the lossless extension.
