Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the landmark science fiction blockbuster Total Recall, Quartet Records and Studio Canal present Academy Award-winner Jerry Goldsmith’s thrilling score on an all-new 2-CD special edition. Directed by Paul Verhoeven (RoboCop, Basic Instinct) and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone, Total Recall helped change the future of cinematic imagery, while Goldsmith’s score marked a culmination of styles and techniques the composer had developed over four decades of composing for film and television.

Total Recall represents one of the iconic composer’s last masterpieces, recorded with the National Philharmonic Orchestra of London, under his own baton. With this edition, Quartet has expanded upon all of the previous releases of the score, allowing fans of the film and of great music to experience the intrigue, the action, and the exotic world of Total Recall like never before. For the first time, the score as written for the film can now be heard—and with the actual film performances. Cues such as “The Dream” and “The Implant” feature previously unreleased takes, while “Where Am I?” and the “End Credits” make their debut. Exciting bonus tracks include a variety of source cues and an alternate performance of “Clever Girl” from the films original German recording sessions!

Disc One contains the film score, while Disc Two features the original 1990 soundtrack album, alternates, and source music. All of this material—nearly 2 � hours in total—has been entirely remixed and remastered from the original digital multi-track tapes by Goldsmith’s longtime scoring mixer, Bruce Botnick. Produced by Neil S. Bulk and Botnick, this new edition includes authoritative liner notes from film music writer Jeff Bond, featuring new interviews with director Paul Verhoeven, music editor Ken Hall, composer Bruno Louchouarn, and Botnick—all presented in a lavishly designed 24-page full-color booklet. With every beat, every cue, and everything you could want to know about the making of this iconic score, it’s more than the definitive release--it’s the release of your dreams.

That German recording of Clever Girl is fascinating; and to think it's stitched together from the "best bits" of twenty different takes. No wonder they moved the sessions to London, where they should have been to start with. A score like this - rhythmically complex (the frequency of time signature changes in that cue alone is ludicrous) and fast paced cannot be short-changed and entrusted to a third-rate budget ensemble. To think that this orchestra was the premiere symphony orchestra in Germany's third biggest city (Munich) is simply shocking. Horrendous ensemble, weak and cracking brass, intonation problems, false entries, and some of that "Battle Beyond The Stars Syndrome" - during some of the fast runs the players seem to some close to quitting all together. Just listen to the final section - after that tortured Raisuli Attacks-esque passage for unison trumpets, there is a modulation and the melody is transferred to the strings; brass is supposed to play clean, fast attack staccato punctuation - but you can barely make out the notes. By the time the melody ends and the strings move to hold each note for a bar's length they might as well have gone home.

Nobody's pretending this isn't really, REALLY difficult stuff for a brass player - but, I mean, REALLY.

This is same problem that destroyed so many mid-nineties City Of Prague Philharmonic recordings - great for slow, grand, romantic passages (John Barry) that depend less on precision... but put some Goldsmith or Williams in front of them and they sound like a school orchestra.

Wow I can actually hear an orchestra now. Before I couldn't even stand to listen to this. I'm still not sure what I think of it but at least it sounds like there is an orchestra. Maybe listening to Explorers has gotten me to be able to understand Goldsmith's style of mixing synth with orchestra.

I've only recently watched Total Recall and I watched the 'Mind-Bending Edition' (which btw is one fantastic Blu-ray restoration).
That means that I've also only recently heard Jerry Goldsmith's score, and it's great, like many Goldsmith scores it gets better every time you listen to it.

Anyway, thank you for sharing this Expanded 2-Disc Edition. I can only imagine it must have been difficult to get a hold of it, when it's limited to 3000 units.
