Nice to see Harry Gregson Williams is back. Haven't loved Ridley Scott's recent choices for composers like Marc Streitenfeld and Alberto Iglesias. None of their soundtracks match Kingdom of Heaven, which was like 10 years ago. High hopes for this reunion, so a big thanks to you T-1000.

Why I like to wait for iTunes as it's not likely to be transcoded.
Short story, there are ways to tell it's transcoded to iTunes, but that's an entirely longer matter.

Right now, I do believe some digital stores offer VBR.
I don't know what and it always becomes a larger issue.

Naturally, I'll upgrade as times goes by.

I wanted Everest when it first got upped, but it was something that could wait.

HGW has higher priority for aesthetic reasons.

I had a rare cover of LOTR:FOTR with Sean Bean on it for a short while.
Sadly, it got killed by a water spill. :sad:

It isn't 320 kbps, just 241 to 254 knps.

That's what DaK meant by VBR.
The encode settings show:
-m j -V 0 -q 0 -lowpass 22.1 --vbr-new -b 32

-V 0 allows for a maximum of 320 kbps, if needed.
But in most cases, average of 240-254 is sufficient.

The shimmering electronics and other textures in 'Making Potatoes', 'Message from Hermes', 'Sprouting Potatoes', etc are refreshing. The main theme in 'Mars' is simple, hopeful and effective. Overall after Monkey Kingdom, Miss You Already, HGW has delivered another a solid score. Here's hoping the sound mix is proper so that the score isn't drowned in dialogue and sound effects. Also fingers crossed for Alien: Paradise Lost.

2004!! Major Mis print!!

Thank you so much for this! Seeing the film tomorrow. Other than "The Force Awakens" and "The Hateful Eight", this is my most anticipated film of the winter (including "Spectre" which I'm excited for) and have been curious about Gregson-Williams' score for this!

I also highly recommend reading Andy Weir's book if you haven't. The film is extremely faithful to it and Drew Goddard wrote the script for it and was originally slated to direct. He was pulled off of this and "Daredevil" in order to focus on "The Sinister Six" for Sony unfortunately.

I have the book and will start reading it as soon as I can. The film was AMAZING.

Thanks a lot. Just saw the movie and the OST really stood out for me.

I thought it was interesting that a few of the cues in the opening sound deliberately similar to Jerry Goldsmith's work on Alien, which I don't think is on the OST. I wonder if those were composed by Gregson-Williams, another composer or created in post by the editors. There are also a few cues scattered here and there that are very reminiscent of Clint Mansell's score for Moon.

I kind of regret seeing the movie now. It was a bland crowdpleaser with nothing interesting or original to say. I also really hated how PC it tried to be in attempting to portray the Chinese government as helpful and humane. So now I can't help but think about the atrocious film when I listen to the score.

Overall very nice "new age" synth score with some (not too many) interesting parallels to Morricone's Mission to Mars ("Emergency Launch"). The rest is more or less typical G-W-fare, which doesn't mean it's bad. Just... typical.

Is it great? Well, not really. It does the job in the movie and that's the most important thing.

Would it have been a better score if done by Michael Giacchino or John Williams and in the classical way? Not necessarily.

But maybe improved to a higher level with music by a composer like Cliff Martinez (Solaris), John Murphy (Sunshine) or Paul Leonard-Morgan (Dredd).

So does anyone know how the unreleased cues fit in with the OST? Is the OST even in film/chronological order? Are the new cues completely unreleased, or is there some overlap with the OST?

"Stomach Op" would go in-between OST tracks 2 & 3, right? But what about the rest?

If you like the track "See you in a few". You'll love the soundtrack to "Intersection" by James Newton Howard. Very similar :)
