Hi! The following release is one of the two Deluxe Editions people voted for here (alongside Spiderman 3):
(Poll) Ask SonicAdventure a Deluxe Edition of your favourite score (Thread 179037)

Intro

Finally, its done! You cannot believe how big of an obstacle the score to Last Samurai has been during the last year. Before I started to work on it in October 2014 I half expected that I wouldnt like the result. This fear fulfilled itself, at least partly. Once I started in earnest two weeks ago, I found to my surprise that I had fun. But the year before it? Hell! I simply didnt want to do it. I did not like the movie when I watched in in cinemas and while I liked the OST I had not listened to it for a decade. I should have simply chosen to do Spiderman 3 only but then I considered the huge amount of Zimmer-fans on this forum and I decided to do both of the winners. Well, this is the first of the two and I hope you like it. Explanations follow below.

The Music

The music was problematic, at least for me. I cannot understand why so many people love this score, its a mystery to me. During the battle music ("Way Of The Sword") I half expect the "Barbarian Horde" from Gladiator to enter; a few minutes earlier Im on my way to Zucchabar, also from Gladiator. The 'hero' theme? A mixture of Pirates of the Caribbean & Gladiator. The only music I like is the Love Theme (or 'Peace' theme; whatever title you prefer). The Japanese sounding music is only pseudo Japanese and not even terribly original. The whole soundtrack is pretty simple, lacking tonality shifts, dissonances or sophisticated rhythms. This can be nice for a while... but something like this gets boring soon. The only redeeming parts of this score are the soft parts, those are indeed very good. My most beloved track would be 'Captured': its brilliant in its simplicity and self-containment. But then you have the 'hero' theme blasting in your ear: masculine, edging on being an accidental parody. I will get back to this point later. When it comes to the musical flow, the OST is far superior. It contains all major ideas and condenses them into a tight and quite beautiful package. My chronological version doesnt flow as well, even though I tried to alleviate problems by combining tracks (I know, some of you hate this... well, I dont care :D). For those interested in the best presentation, simply listen to the OST.

The Sound

The sessions sounded nothing like the OST. For one, the mix was different (but not all the time!). The major part however was an EQ difference so big Ive rarely seen before. Even more difficult was the fact that every soft or loud part was equalized differently on the OST. All of these things were corrected by me as best as possible. Since I wanted to keep four tracks from the OST I started out by matching the sessions to the OST. I wasnt entirely successful but I came close. Still present audible differences between the two are: lack of refinement for the tracks sourced from the sessions (mp3 encoding is to fault here); instruments arent glued to their place, on the sessions-derived tracks they wander from left to right and back in a matter of seconds. But I doubt that many people will notice these differences. In fact, the tracks from the sessions have never sounded this good.
When I achieved matching the sound of the sessions to the OST I changed the sound of all tracks to my preferences. Meaning, I turned it into something more balanced. Dont worry, the deep bass Zimmer is famous for is still there, even though its diminished. The overall sound is pleasant, crisp, punchy yet warm and charming. In fact, Im very happy with the sound.

Cover

The cover wasnt as difficult as I feared it to be. Nevertheless, it isnt terribly original or inventive. You can choose between two designs: one is sand brown, the other is dark red. For the latter you have two frontcover designs but only one backcover design. For the sand brown design its the other way around, you can see preview pictures above.

2 Versions (irony ahead)

While I was working on it, I thought that parts of the music are so blatantly manly, heroic and ballsy that I had to react to this. For that reason, Im offering two versions: my preferred 'Honourable Edition' and the 'Bigger Balls Edition'. I figured that many Zimmer fans are male adolescents dreaming about a bigger cock / balls (choose whatever you perceive you lack the most). The musical contents and the cover are the same for both versions, the main difference is the sound. The 'Bigger Balls Edition' sounds like a Remote Control Production released in recent years. In fact, I aimed for a sound similar to the one on Mad Max: Fury Road and Terminator:Genisys. In the end I arrived at a mixture of Gladiator and The Dark Knight Rises. What are the differences? The 'Bigger Balls Edition' has way more subbass (the infamous "droning"), less mids, more presence energy and a bit more treble. And it is much louder (roughly 4 dB too loud). I was aiming for a gritty and extremely in-your-face sound. Those who download this version can use it to brag how big their coc... erm, bass now is ;)

Irony aside: despite sounding very unbalanced and not at all beautiful, the sound of the 'Bigger Balls Edition' actually is ok, it fits the music surprisingly well. I wont hold it against you if you download it, I will just say "So you feel tiny in the pubic departement, eh?" Haha! No, I wont. Just choose the version you like the most, really. Though Id recommend the 'Honourable' version, its more balanced and beautiful and will sound better on more playback systems.

Not a score I listen to too often, but I do -- in all seriousness -- have moments when "adolescent male" perfectly describes my score tastes. This score certainly hits the spot in such moments. There are also times when I seek the score out for its more reflective qualities. As such, I'm grabbing both editions now! :)

When listening to Zimmer power anthem stuff I usually fill my head with images of fictional girl heroes doing hero things, so I'm not sure why the gender association is seen to be so straightforward. I hear it as "heroic" music, and people of any gender and age group can be heroic. </rant>

But that's neither here nor there, and it's amazing to have another probably-amazing polished recording sessions by IMO the greatest sound balancer on this site or any other film score website. Cheers SonicAdventure!

Youre the first to say something about it after downloading and listening to it.

All others praised it before they heard it (thats at least my impression)... I mean, I could have fucked this up beyond measure so I wouldnt say anything unless Ive listened to it. This isnt criticism, btw. Just curiousity.

I was tinkering around with it myself last month, comparing the sessions with the score proper, noting what was missing, what was different (the first fight between Harry and Peter is interesting because the sessions version is an alternate that excludes any passage with Elfman's theme), what could possibly be pulled from the surround channels, etc..

Yup. I have a list someone nice (I forgot who) provided. It lists every track we have so far, where to find better sounding alternatives, etc. I aim to create a version Christopher Young intended. That means Im going to exclude tacked-on stuff by Danny Elfman or interpolations of Elfman's theme by Deborah Lurie or John Debney (?).

Hahahaha I love it when titles are/try to be intentionally deceptive though it's hardly a spoiler because it's so - I want to say - obvious? xD
It's not as tragic a mistake as when people thought Daniel Day-Lewis played the eponymous last of the Mohicans whereas it was Uncas,
the last pure-blood Mahican son, or, alternatively, Chingachgook, the last tribal chief who tragically outlives his own son in one of the finest
scenes to have ever been choreographed for the silver screen.

Its a nice offer but no, please dont stress yourself. It will take some time before I even start considering them. I have other stuff in the pipeline first.

Always had a soft spot for this soundtrack. When Zimmer gets to work in Asian themes and instruments like here and in Beyond Rangoon, he produces his most peaceful and honourable music. Glad you took the time to give this the sonic touch.

-> I should have watched the movie in preparation for this Edition. Oh well...

Also, in terms of bluray, only the EUR/CEE blurays have TrueHD track for the English language.
North American BD's have DD only, plus 20 other foreign language tracks.

Haha yes! I was just thinking of that the last time I watched TLOTM.
That's a movie I'm getting in the new UHD-BD formats when they start rolling out.

Holy S***, I have not even seen that one. Should I?

Yes. There aren't many different bluray versions out there.
They're all the same, at this point.
I think the main thing was that the DVD's were mistakenly all PAL-spedup and then slowed down or something.

The blurays should be fine.
I recommend: 1 hr 57 min (117 min) (director's cut) (USA)

Holy S***, I have not even seen that one. Should I?

Well... I feel awful for the spoiler hahaha You definitely should. It's typical Michael Mann length but it's one of his finest films and my personal favourite. It features a terrific soundtrack by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman - it's Oscar ineligibility due to the fact that Edelman received credit for some minor scenes he scored after entering late into the game was at the time widely considered travesty. Seriously, I feel like Trevor Jones' "Promentory" is the most recognizable (and at times, beautiful) piece of film music ever written.

The problem is... I never was that big a fan of Michael Mann movies. Ive seen a few of his productions (not TLOTM) and I didnt like his strong visual style. And when it comes to composers outside of the fairly small circle I regularly listen to, I discover those - to me - "new" composers through their work in a movie I found to be very good.

I finally found some time to listen to it!

The new sound is great and you did really a good work. But...

Just like you said: the normal album flows better. I don't like the Last Samurai Soundtrack that much, so there are a lot of clues in the way to make the longer album a good listening experience. I hope I don't hurt you, when I write this. You may be master in sound miracles, but even you can't make the music better than it is;-)

I never understand why the score get's so much love. His work on King Arthur was miles better and one of his best in the older time. ! I love that one. I don't know why many prefer the Samurai. I also have huge problems with his infamous horn blow... I didn't enjoy the Batman Score either...

I hope I am not alone with this.

I wish you all a nice weekend!

I don’t know how to feel about this. I love you for doing an extreme amount of work (which definitely can be heard) and putting it here for free. I’m also happy to finally see this in FLAC. That said, I feel like this release completely destroys the flow of the score. Some of my favourite songs are split in half, other ones are out of place or between (to me) completely irrelevant piece of composition. Again, I respect the amount of work put into this.

I love this score for its peaceful vibe. Take “Exploring the Village” for example. Just the opening note makes me calm down and prepare for the next moment. In this release its hidden 2:20 into the song and I don’t want to wait for that moment that long :D The other thing I never understood is crossfading. I hate when a song I like doesn’t have its starting/ending point “defined”. I don’t want to listen to a song that was before this one nor do I want to have a “brief glimpse” into next one. It feels stupid to me… and it’s not about this release (I’m looking at you Blizzard!). Blizzard have seem to mastered this. They even add SFX to their scores on purpose. Like seriously, who the fuck thought that was a good idea.

Again, thank you for this release which is by all means superior in quality and mastering to the lossy mp3 release I have but I don’t feel like deleting it any time soon. I would be so happy to have your mastered version or at least a FLAC one without those crossfades.

Well, time to start dreaming…

Well, time to start dreaming…

I have a suggestion: just listen to the OST. Youre completely correct in saying that it flows MUCH better. This is one of the reasons why I dislike working on complete Zimmer scores; their flow is much worse compared to their respective OSTs which include all major thematic ideas, rhythms, etc., anyway. Even worse, his complete scores are often repetitive and, in turn, get boring soon. For that reason I much prefer his OSTs, as in this case.

There is one thing however I cannot agree on: crossfades. A score for a movie is a different beast compared to the same score without the movie. Without the movie it was written for, it needs to be able to stand on its own two feet, crossfades help to create a certain flow, making musical ideas more transparent. And this flow is important for musical development, IMO. If a score is interrupted constantly by 4-second-pauses and consists of roughly 60 tracks, each around 0:45 seconds short, it isnt exactly an enjoyment and one might loose sight of all ideas. Well, its good for analyzing the music, compare it to specific scenes in the movie... but who does that? Musicians and composers can do that even with crossfades. Music is made to be enjoyed, not to be analyzed. My opinion, of course :)

I don’t like the sound on the OST. :(

ad crossfades: I don’t like the fact that crossfades work in just one particular moment, which is when you listen to an album as the author intended. You’re limited by their choice. That’s where my “hate” comes from. I rarely find myself listening to a whole album. I only hear the full album length when I’m picking my favourite songs to add them to my favs playlist. I think you can imagine the moment a crossfaded song comes in after a song that ended with silence. Infuriating!!! Yeah, first world problems :)

…it needs to be able to stand on its own two feet

For me, it’s always about the musical ideas. I never listen to a score just to reimagine the movie. I listen to it because of the emotions it brings. And music can do that without pictures. But I can see it may make it a bit more consumable for some people. Maybe I’m just a special snowflake.

Thanks for your reply!

Ah, explained as well! I listen to the whole score, mostly from beginning to end. I treat it, sort of, as a work of classical music (all the while aware that scores are not classical music). Thats why I dont need playlists. Quite convenient :D

I can understand that. But do you even listen to songs you dont like or do you skip them? Because it seems weird to me to waste my time on a thing I dont enjoy. I went to this concert two weeks back and they played Schuberts Symphony No. 8. Its great but so repetitive I couldnt help myself but think Gosh, just let it be over. Its like 70 bars and then repetition. That time I could totally use a skip button :D

Oops, didnt reply.

Yes, I listen to tracks I dont like. For one, that makes me appreciate the good tracks even more. Another reason is that when the music is good I dont mind one or two tracks that arent as good as the rest. Even in tracks that arent as good, there usually is some thematic development needed for the other tracks. At least with good scores or classical works. But when, for example, 50% of the music isnt engaging, I dont listen to it at all. When I was younger, I used to make compilation for the car or a portable player. But not anymore, nowadays it feels like Im ripping a work apart. This all deals with scores or classical music, with mainstream like pop or rock its different. Except if its clear that Im listening to a concept album, like the ones by, I dont know, Bjrk.

All of this is the reason that I dont listen to Schubert's Symphony No. 8, just as you I think that there isnt enough variation. And this gets worse the older I get.

The sessions I used for this were lossy. Before I started to work on this, several people reported that they were trying to get me the sessions in lossless, which, in the end, didn't work out. However, the 320 kbps I used seemed to have been a 1st generation encode so the quality generally was ok. So far, no one has shared these sessions lossless. But you can be sure that they exist.
