Alexandre Desplat
Godzilla (Deluxe Edition)
2014

40 tracks, TRT: 1:55:40, FLAC (lossy sourced)

Link:

https://mega.co.nz/#!8pVGjADD!ieWx8kqcSmOJtrB_Aw6Yd-aFRrtDolXC4pXJ4BJdQoU

Track Listing:

http://img4021.photobox.co.uk/69693067fa198f8d495f5858eb620977dd3f67017603bbfb8e 5a256e3126ae661522b9b6.jpg

Note: removed all silences and leveled all tracks out to provide a more consistent listening experience. Some cues are split up in order to make consistent leveling possible as some cues are mixed way too low in the source. This doesn't disrupt the flow too much in my opinion. To further enhance flow I mixed several shorter cues together. Not many but just pointing it out.

This score was a real surprise and one I didn't expect to keep me so busy. Alexandre Desplat has not been a favorite composer of mine in the past but I am falling for this score more and more with each listen. The "prologue" cue is one that I often find myself listening to on loop. It has that perfect sense of dread, urgency and action which is the perfect way to start off a colossal score such as this. I admit that at first I found it incredibly difficult to adjust to Desplat's syncopated rhythms but now can't imagine the score without them. It drives the score.

In regards to the cue "Halo Jump", I'm not sure where in the film this fits in but it stands out from the entire score and matches nothing else on the album. It reminds me of Penderecki/Ligeti. I left it in the place it was in the "complete score" bootleg because I didn't want to leave it out. It didn't quite feel like it belonged in the extras but I could be wrong. Info on that cue would be appreciated.

I didn't notice this until I posted but tracks "Halo Prayer," "Halo Jump" and "Chinatown/Egg Laying/Faceoff" should go in that order, not the one I have set up.

The source was 192 MP3 and as a result, the final render is in lossy FLAC to ensure no further quality loss.

I was going to post this sooner but had to make sure everything was properly mastered/leveled and the flow was as consistent as I could make it before doing so. Enjoy and as always, leave some comments!

NOTE (3/5/2015): I have merged a few more tracks together (i.e. "Trestle Bridge" and "Full Moto Rising", "Golden Gate Chaos" and "Muto Grabs the Bomb", "2 Against 1/Bomb to Boat/Blow the Nest" and "Male Muto's Demise" and "Godzilla Triumphs/Ford Collapses/Rescue" and "Aftermath/Resurrection". All of these changes greatly enhance the flow and hopefully you all will enjoy!

Thanks Cody. And the cue "Halo Jump" is indeed a Ligeti cue "Requiem, for Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, 2 Mixed Choirs & Orchestra", but i guess this is a new recording.

Whether this will win you over to Desplat's past works, I can't vouch for. However I personally think this album is a rare gem from Desplat's discography. I haven't heard many of the techniques utilized here in any of his other works.

That's not the same thing in the movie.

It's similar. Very similar.
But not identical.
It's missing so much elements.

Gyrgy Ligeti - "Requiem, for Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, 2 Mixed Choirs & Orchestra (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PH0pTGYJ63k)" from "Requiem".

The actual song is around 26 minuts in length (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aL5lnAQ2b68).

The "soundtracks" list on IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0831387/soundtrack) lists Gyrgy Ligeti.
I'm pretty sure if I checked the end credits in the bluray, it'd credit Gyrgy Ligeti, too.

Never is Killer Tracks credited anywhere on anywhere in the world for being involved with Godzilla.

I noticed that the running time is longer than that of the recording sessions.
That's because of the addition of the aforementioned 'Halo Jump' track and the 'End Credits' track.
Many of the other tracks from the recording sessions are either split or joined with silence removed (see first post).

Remastered version of the sessions. My source was 122 minutes but after removing silences and such it was 115, almost 116 minutes.

Thank you so very, VERY much for this. I had hoped that there would eventually be a longer version of this score. It was my favourite movie of last year and my favourite score. And the quality is phenomenal. This version allows you to enjoy Desplat's work a lot more. Kudos, man. Thank you again.

Thanks for the share. I was very thankful that the complete score to this film leaked, but with the copy circulating being one of those that has poor mastering and long silences, it makes it almost unlistenable to me. And unfortunately since I upgraded to a Mac recently I'm unable to cut lossy files without transcoding them.

So thank you for sharing this and hopefully converting this to V-0 for my iPod won't hinder the quality too much.

03-04-2015, 05:59 AM
Also I will be adding a revised copy which will merge the two tracks before the end credits together. I can't believe I missed it in my initial edit but after having seen the film, I did my best possible to represent the mixing as in the film but still provide you with an enjoyable listening experience without the need for visuals to stimulate your imagination. Having seen how the score was used within the film, I wasn't expecting it to be so buried within the film's sound effects nor did it match my imagination at all. Out of the film, the score is still enjoyable and nostalgic which are two great qualities in a score. Many may not enjoy it but as I've stated, I think it's one of Desplat's best works. I'm catering to my own taste here so it may not mean much to anyone. I enjoyed his scores to Benjamin Button and the Harry Potter films, one of which I have completed and posted a deluxe edition for Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 with a deluxe edition for Pt. 2 in the works. Godzilla has inspired me to go back to Pt. 2. I'll be re-working it and will try to have it up ASAP.

In the meantime, as GrayEdwards has pointed out it does have unpredictable pacing but by the time the end credits roll, you'll feel a little more fulfilled and have a theme to hum afterwards.

GrayEdwards
03-04-2015, 06:11 AM
Benjamin Button is still my favorite score of his, but Ghost Writer, Tree of Life, Painted Veil, Birth & Philomena are also great. Godzilla was my favorite of his this year, and also in my top 2 score of this year, along with Noah. I suppose to the casual listener the music can seem frenetic and loud (I've also heard people say it felt "dated" or "old"), but I really enjoyed it, even my first time hearing it with the film. I liked how the timing scheme kept changing, making it somewhat unpredictable in its pacing. So much of music created today follows overused rhythms... being someone that does not possess the needed talent to create music, it really irks me when I can guess almost exactly how a cue will progress from just a few quick notes. Brian Tyler and the RCP crowd are particularly guilty of this.

I'm just a big fan of this score and I'm glad that this new "release" is hopefully getting in the hands of people who haven't heard it before. The film was largely a disappoint to me (which I judged from the trailers to be akin to a Christopher Nolan film), but the score really surprised me. I hadn't heard Desplat do an action score, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but like with Thomas Newman and Skyfall, it just blew me away.

Hopefully if Godzilla 2 ever gets made, Desplat returns.

Hopefully if Godzilla 2 ever gets made, Desplat returns.

You're new.

Godzilla 2 and 3 are confirmed and in production.
Gareth Edwards is directing both of them.
He confirmed part 2 on second/third day of opening for Godzilla last year.
Confirmation for 3 came some time afterward.
Up until the theatrical debut of the first one, he was quite involved with the Facebook social community.
He's done several Q&A's for it, leaving sequels in the air (largely depending on box office sales; naturally).

They're going to bring in some of the classic monsters for the next two.
Now that everything is nearly established in the first film.

They're just working out details of what they really want in these next two.
Currently debating on whether or not they should introduce the mechas.

No word on who's going to compose 2 and/or 3.
Would be nice if Desplat sticks around for the franchise, that's if he doesn't get too busy doing other films.

Glad Elfman was never involved. He has a tendency to drop things and run elsewhere. That ADHD SOB.

I knew about the announcement, but with him now working on Star Wars and the lukewarm critical response & box office (it did okay, but for the size of the budget and marketing, I'm sure WB/Legendary was expecting more), I'm still not convinced the sequel(s) will happen until they actually start shooting it. With Hollywood being the way it is, nothing is ever a sure thing. Hell, even if it's shot, that still doesn't guarantee that it will ever see the light of day.

I'm still not sure what sure what the specifics are now that Legendary is at Universal. Godzilla's production was such a mess anyways, I'm not sure I have faith that a sequel will be any better. I mean, how many hands and drafts did the script go through, anyways... 5+ writers? There were major structural changes happening to the plot when the film was only a month or so from shooting. Maybe even WHILE they were shooting. I still have no clue what Elizabeth Olsen was talking about, that it was nice to be working on a film where character development mattered, and that her part was fleshed and whole, not just filler. Because it couldn't have been this film. I'm not even sure her character was one-dimensional, let alone two. For the spectacular cast they had, it sure was a waste. This film was nowhere near as good as Edwards' first film, Monsters. Now THAT was a great movie.

Nope. But, it does give me a better quality version of the recording sessions than I had before.

If the film versions do not exist, I might just go ahead and start a project on recreating them using the sessions, the normal tracks, and the blu ray.

That is of course unless the actual film versions pop up anytime between when I start and when I finish.

Here I did a quick rip (please excuse the sfx) of when the MUTO hatches to show what I mean. There's this brief moment where a segment of "The Wave" shows up; but a modified version that deletes the choir and drums. Then it goes back to the MUTO track.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/5u303x7m639i66i/MUTO%20Example.mp3

It's little things like that throughout the soundtrack: little bits of segments being shared, some instruments being deleted, some being added.

But that's not to say that I think the film tracks are better (I enjoy the soundtrack either way), I just find it interesting to hear the differences of the film vs. the album vs. the sessions.

We can hope for those to turn up but as it stands, I don't have them. Won't attempt a Bluray rip as there's likely to be SFX across all channels.

Is your example ripped from the surround channels? Sounds like the drums are actually there, just not mixed into the surrounds as prominently. I don't have a copy of the movie to double check so I could be wrong.
