Yeah, I was a little sad about that too, when I first heard it. :(

Not much we can do about.

I heard hes settimg up his own company, but that he would still assist square-enix but in a diminished role (so it's not all bad)

His influences will still be there

I have a feeling Square will come knocking on his door every new Final Fantasy or game they put out asking. I mean he's only retired, that means he doesn't have to work to feed himself anymore. It doesn't mean he wont occassionally stop by and do a piece or two

Bah, he's done some good work, but not much I'd call exceptional. There are much better composers working on games these days.

Yeah, there's plenty of talent out there, out with the old and in with the new so to say.

Still when talking about Game composers, Nobuo is the first to spring to my mind, followed by Konji Ito ( i think thats how you spell his name) .

I got that as well actualy, from a news thread on http://www.ffonline.com/ and this is what it said exactaly:

Nobuo Uematsu resigns from Square Enix
11.02.04 Mara

The acclaimed composer of music for several Final Fantasy games will begin a freelance career after many years of working with Square Enix.

Nobuo Uematsu will start his own company, although the possibility that he will work with Square Enix in the future remains open.

This is the latest in a series of resignations of high-profile Square Enix employees such as Kazushige Nojima and Masato Katou.

Yep, it's true. He's 'graduating'. However, he's kept going on with the 'Black Mages' and another production called Please Smile. Also, he's still being present at a lot of FF Concerts. E.g. 'Dear Friends'.
