Ive always wanted to master Treasure Planet. The OST sounded too bright and piercing to me, also, the brickwall limiting applied to it wasnt very good. So when the sessions where released last year (?), I finally was able do it. So here it is, sounding warmer, more pleasant and charming than the OST. Of course, I applied dynamic compression (doing it manually, mind you) so that it can be enjoyed on systems that arent High End-y. For all I know, it is complete. Though Ive still erased one bit (the beginning of 'Solar Surfer' - a Thank You to Fink again who confirmed what I had already suspected). Unusual for me, Ive kept an alternate: 'Silver Leaves', it was just too beautiful and too different to be left off.

Oh, and another thing: it wont fit on a common CD-R. Youd need a 90-minute CD-R. I hate 2 CD releases with a vengeance and so I usually prefer to do single CD releases. Though you might be able to squeeze it onto a normal CD by erasing the song 'Always know where you are' and the alternate.

One word about the songs: I simply had to include them. For one, JNH composed a transition specifically for 'I'm still here', secondly, they are important for the character development of Jim Hawkins. They werent just 'patched on' afterwards, they were written for the movie. So theyre in (besides, they sound better than ever before).

Hm, is there anything more to say? I dont think so.

Wait, there is: have fun! :)

Out of curiosity, what exactly did Fink confirm?

That the track 'Solar Surfer' was one of the intended versions to start the movie. Both the 'Prologue' and 'Solar Surfer' contain a very similar part: the celtic music, centered around the fiddle. I thought it to be strange to have two pieces featuring the same kind of music consecutively. And I suspected that the second piece contained music for the unused introduction of the movie (I vaguely remembered seeing a deleted scene on my DVD). Fink confirmed that and also provided some kind of guide for those pieces. Result: 'Prologue' now segues into 'Solar Surfer'. He also reminded me to mix Rzeznik's song with the score... I would have simply forgotten.

1. I use the most recent mp3 codec version (LAME). Many people here use the original Fraunhofer encoder... which is now ancient and very, very bad. Or they use very old LAME variants - bad as well
2. I use the highest quality setting LAME allows - its called: - q0

You are the man! Seriously, I always look forward to your deluxe editions.

Sorry for the long post, but I have to tell you this, you might like it:

Something you might like to hear is that I always take your deluxe editions to a friend of mine. You see, I usually listen these scores on a pair of Pioneer HDJ-1000 cans combined with a Cowon IAudio 10 player, and even though that combination is (for as far as portable audio is concerned) unbeatable in price and quality of the sound, portable sound always just goes that far without spending thousands, and even then, the biggest problem is cross-stereo, which as you know is just non-existent. The Pioneers are very transparent (as they should be with then top-of-the-line DJ cans), with a huge (propably unnecessary) frequency range (5hz to 40khz), with little to no coloration to the sound, and the Cowon is a miniature powerhouse of a player with support for almost every type of audio format available.

And yet, it's nothing compared to a good pair of speakers. Now, I have a couple of options concerning that, which are A) a 5.1 Infinity Beta HCS set combined with a (1988!) NAD 3400 amp (that thing is a beast!). But that is no good since I've got a really small room at my parents and the woofer, which might only be 100w, shakes the house like hell is coming with every pinch of volume. I haven't turned it up to high, it really crossfades beautifully with the sattelites, but the problem is just that you can't listen to it softly. They need a good ounce of volume to actually truly start working (or at least the amplifier does before it truly kicks in, it's like it's asleep at lower volumes). So that's not really possible.

Then we have a pair of JBL Northridge (only the front two of the 5.1 set, which is enough. They are already 225 watts a piece. The sub is 1k!!! That's a little overkill if you ask me) speakers in the living room, sitting comfortably besides a Denon amp (don't which one, but it truly sounds great and even though it's not powerful enough (120w per output) for the speakers, it's loud enough for me). These are speakers which are absolutely a blast for movies and of course film music, but yeah, they are in the living room and even though my mother likes a score or two, I can't crank it up to eleven).

So now I finally get this friend of mine, a so called audiophile (albeit one who still loves music), who might not have the mightiest set on earth (he swears by B&W and Denon as a speaker/amp combination), but boy do they sound good. And he is (most of the time) absolutely stunned by what you are able to achieve on these soundtracks. It's awesome work, and much appreciated. I love it when I can listen to your work at high levels, and we have truly enjoyed every single one of your deluxe editions. The differences are sometimes stunning (Jurassic Park, Salt, the Harry Potters and A Perfect Storm come to mind). He didn't enjoy Avatar though, but that's because he truly prefers the sound of the practically already perfect OST. I think with that one it really comes down to preference.

I wanted to let you know this because you have brought us some great nights listening to some great music in the absolute best quality available, a chance so unique that I would sincerely like to thank you for your work, both from me and from him.

Now, off to listen to this one!

Much appreciated!

Hm, I think in both cases it's caused by the French accent on the "a". I don't know the solution in that case, I just wanted additional password security. Apparently I chose the correct character for that... though that that would create problems, I simply did not foresee. Are you both on a Mac? Might it help to install another keyboard driver?

09-07-2014, 09:48 AM
Yes, I am--version 10.9.4 ...

Okay. I'm also running 10.9.4.

Do you have "The Unarchiver" archive extraction application? ...if not, Google it, download it, and install it (it is FREE). The current version is 3.9.1.

Assuming you want FLAC files, did you successfully download the three files ( EtheriumSpace.part1.rar / EtheriumSpace.part2.rar / EtheriumSpace.part3.rar ) ?

Are the three files, respectively, these sizes; 209.7 MB / 209.7 MB / 75.1 MB ?

If this is all true, put the three files in a new folder. Drag & Drop the first file (EtheriumSpace.part1.rar) onto The Unarchiver app (which should now be in your "Applications" folder).

The Unarchiver will ask for the password (R.L.Stevenson--la-Disney). Copy & Paste it.

The Unarchiver should now extract all three RAR files producing one folder.

You're done.

HTH.

I have thought about a few days before I finally decided to answer your post. A little warning: some sentences I write may sound arrogant. But there's no harm intended.

Both, the Pioneer cans and the Cowon iAudio, should be capable of quality sound. But the frequency range as stated by Pioneer doesn't have anything to do with how they sound. The range doesn't count, the distribution of frequencies within a limited frequency band is important. Are their boosts or notches at certain frequency areas? Do their earcups produce distortions? It's all unimportant if you're happy with them. Though I myself prefer headphones that have been measured to feature a very balanced frequency response lacking any preference for certain frequencies.

When you have a small room it's usually better to have small speakers as well. Probably also the reason why a subwoofer rated at 100 Watts can produce a strong bass. And even though the NAD sounds well to your ears I would replace it with a newer model. A lot has happened in amplifier technology during the past 20 years, now even surround receivers costing no more than $ 500 sound so well that they easily beat 20-year-old amps then costing four times as much. That the combination of NAD / Infinity only starts to sound appealing when it gets louder might be caused by loudness; when something is louder it sounds better to us. Only because it's louder, not because of actual quality differences.

Why should the Denon amp be unsuited for the JBL Northridge? The JBL are only rated at 225 Watts, it's what they can bear for a certain time without falling apart. The same for the Denon: it's rated to produce 120 Watts for a specified amount of time without overheating or shutting off. And depending on your loudspeakers, those 120 Watts outputted power might already be reached with volumes you still perceive as low. With loudspeakers it's not about Watt, it's about sensitivity. How much gain can they produce with 1 Watt? That's important. The Watts the speakers or the amp are rated with are just as unimportant as the frequency range of your Pioneer cans.

Is he one of those audiophiles believing in snake oil like hyper-expensive cables, fancy power cables, green rings for CDs and the like? :)

Because I certainly object those things. The combination of B&W / Denon is a good one. B&W loudspeakers are not the most balanced but they have a certain frequency response sounding fairly authentic yet pleasant at the same time. More than ok if you ask me. He prefers the OST of Avatar? No surprise, it sounds a bit more aggressive than my set (caused by some peaks around 2,500 - 4,000 Hz... which would be the frequency area at which his B&W loudspeakers have a slight notch... which would effectively create a balanced sound in combination with the Avatar OST... which makes my set sounding too pleasant and / or lacking punch). On the other hand, the Avatar OST really does sound very, very well.

I wanted to let you know this because you have brought us some great nights listening to some great music in the absolute best quality available, a chance so unique that I would sincerely like to thank you for your work, both from me and from him.

Thank you very, very much. I'm always interested in how people are listening to my sets. To read about it, makes me truly happy (in spite of what I've written above).

HTH.

Wow. Perfect guide. Just perfect.

I love them personally. To me they sound unbiased. Yet I'm no expert on these things, and I don't know it's frequency response. They sound right though, and like you said, I guess it all comes down to preference.

I would like to get a better suited amp in the future. At the moment however, I have no money, so I'll make do with what I have. And even if I had, I'd still have to wait for a bigger room. As it is, my room is small and chock full at the moment, so I don't think the change would be worth it at this time. Still, thanks for the tip!

You are absolutely right. I don't DARE put the volume higher than half. Even though the speakers can handle it easily, just the mass amount of volume is quite frightening. I like a good bit of volume, but that to me is just a tad too much (and I guess the neighbours will agree).

Is he one of those audiophiles believing in snake oil like hyper-expensive cables, fancy power cables, green rings for CDs and the like? :)

Nah, he is one of those audiophiles who believes in the holy trinity of playback device (CD in this case), amplifier and speakers being well suited for each other. That and he loathes equalizing (which I love). Sometimes I have to tell him to listen to what's there instead of what's not there, but I guess that is typical. Just as I always searched for new DJ devices (with lots of buttons and little flashing lights of course :)) even though I had a perfect set already.

Interesting, didn't know this, but now that you mentioned it, your set does miss some 'bite' to it, yet only on those speakers. Thanks for the heads up!

Thank you very, very much. I'm always interested in how people are listening to my sets. To read about it, makes me truly happy (in spite of what I've written above).

And thank you, both for the wonderful editions and for this well thought out response. And don't be afraid to sound arrogant or something. You just know your stuff. People make the mistake too often between being an expert and being cocky. I don't, because I love to learn from people, listen to them and frankly, the sheer quality of your deluxe editions speaks for itself.

Best regards!

Yeah, especially for headphones. The Pioneers you own dont seem to be the most balanced (according to measurements Ive found they lack deep bass (!) - unusual for DJ cans). But headphones are a very personal matter and sometimes their perceived differs from their measured response. So if youre happy with them, all is good.

I would like to get a better suited amp in the future. At the moment however, I have no money, so I'll make do with what I have. And even if I had, I'd still have to wait for a bigger room. You still live at your parents, right? Then youre probably a bit younger... when I was your age I had the same problems. No money and not enough room to place my... attention, it now gets cheesy... dreams. When I first started, technology wasnt as advanced as it is now. The quality of playback has improved vastly during the past 20 years. Especially when it comes to headphones, loudspeakers and amplifiers. Quality sound can now be achieved with much less money. Oh, I assume you have a lot sonic bliss ahead of you.

Nah, he is one of those audiophiles who believes in the holy trinity of playback device (CD in this case), amplifier and speakers being well suited for each other. He loathes equalizing? Then you can tell him that the main tool I employ for my editions is an.... equalizer! :D And he probably would hate the amount of DSPs I use for them... should I need them. But thats the not-so-beloved truth about sound: most releases are processed like hell, even though they dont sound like it.

DJ devices? So you aspire to be a 'digital DJ', eh? ;)

Am I allowed to be cocky and give you some advice?

Dont trust anyone. Not people, not companies and definitely not me. Companies want to sell and they will do so no matter the cost. And they will exaggerate or even lie. Before you purchase something or do something, read about it. As much as you can. Do not make uninformed decisions because some magazine or a person you know said "Buy this, this is perfect!". The generally accepted rule of 'more expensive = more sound' isnt true. It just isnt. Magazines will say differently because they need those companies to place ads in their magazine. People will say it to you because they like something - mostly because of nostalgia or not enough information. Look out for measurements. They are boring, I know, but they make you actually know the stuff. And they dont lie (if theyre good). Amass knowledge about all this. Its not easy and takes time - but its worth it. Not many people understand this... but anything audio related isnt 'magic'. Its cold-hearted engineering, science if you will. A CD player for instance is a device fully adhering to engineering principles, if it doesnt, its broken. Many people say something like this: "Led Zeppelin sounds very good, especially on Player ABC-2000 but not on the other player, the CBA-1000." Bullshit. Because one of those players is effectively broken. The truth is far less attractive: the Led Zeppelin recording sounds like shit, the first player just hides it because itself isnt neutral.

But dont turn into me. As you can see, I tend to be too paranoid about these things. Not healthy either.

Enough with the self-indulgence. Enjoy the music :)

Well, at least he doesn't like equalizing between the CD-player, amp and speakers. That's why he never touches those bass/treble knobs on his amp, something I sometimes do if only to compensate for the room in which the music is played (for example, my room).

DJ devices? So you aspire to be a 'digital DJ', eh?

I never aspired to be a full blown DJ. A can just do some things and people seem to have a ball ;). I know, I know, Digital DJ'ing has a bad rep, it's not 'real' or it's 'too easy' or whatever people try to make up to prove whatever it is they want to prove. But I couldn't care less. People talk about these CDJ's like they're the be all, end all of DJ'ing while for me, trading my controller and Traktor (the controller is actually completely tailored to the software) would be a 4000 dollar downgrade because I would actually lose a lot of what I find attractive in digital. Everybody has their opinion, as well they should. To each their own, right?

Funny thing is that people actually come up to me (I DJ at a club in my hometown) and yell that I'm an amateur because I don't have Pioneers. My freaking controller has Pioneer plastered on every possible angle! My headphone are made by Pioneer! I'm lucky my coke doesn't have icecubes that look like the Pioneer logo! :)

Besides, it's not so much the equipment. I've seen people rocking parties with only Windows Media Player.

I've learned the hard way to avoid everything that was/is remastered by Jimmy Page :D

Seriously though, you're absolutely right about that the CD players hiding it.

I posted this in several threads regarding people blindly clicking.
All the links check out, either by manually going through the site or by using JDownloader.

Even if you do have Adblock, NoScript, Antimwarebytes software and othe security protocols, you're still clicking the wrong thing.

I even had a picture up in a couple other threads. Just didn't want to copy/paste message to all the threads and make a spam about it.

Also, if you hover your mouse over each element, you can see what it's going to download (if you look at bottom of window, it shows target link).
.exe or anything besides .zip/.rar/.7z is a dead giveaway you're about to click on the wrong thing.

Go drop yourself into the Grand Canyon.

Here's a friendly tip, Chaucer: when you offer a comeback, make sure it's sensical. You want the other party fuming over your wit, not puzzled over your apparent lack of it.

I would not want you to fume over my "wit", clearly you dont deserve it. Why? Lets just recall that it was you who started attacking me, using the expression 'idiot'. So your post received the only justifiable answer.

Since this was a public affront, I'm obligated to make this a public response.

SonicAdventure, I owe you a threefold apology. First, for throwing the blame of my stupidity on your shoulders. I knew better, and I knew I knew better. And yet I followed through. Why? Because I had a wounded ego and I like to shield myself behind online anonymity. Like a coward. Funny how that works. Second, for persisting in my egocentric antagonism. I wouldn't drop it, I wouldn't let it go, and I certainly wasn't going to admit fault. My ego's a pretty easy thing to crack, and of course someone else had to be held responsible, right? Makes it obvious to everyone but myself, I suppose. Third, because I let any amount of time pass before getting over myself and offering an apology. I could repeat whatever phraseology has come before about "cooling down" or "thinking clearly" or getting back in my "right mind". I didn't act or react appropriately from the onset, so I'm discarding those as excuses.

I'm sorry on all three counts. I'm putting it in your court as to whether or not you want to accept my apology. Given my behavior, I wouldn't blame you if you flipped me off in response. I might even invite you to go ahead and do that anyway. Along with the apology, I want you to know I won't be bothering you over PMs or posting in any of your threads. You can proudly read this as the last correspondence from a lowly idiot.

If it's alright with the moderators, I'd like my original posts to remain as they are. A testament to my stupidity and arrogance, and a good reminder for me what happens when I open my (digital) mouth after just having done something stupid.

We all do stupid things sometimes. It takes a real man (or woman) to stand up and take responsibility for their actions, so regardless of what anyone else does, I want to acknowledge the courage and humility it takes to stand up and apologize like this. Good for you. You are on the path of evolving into a better person - something we should all strive to do, but is an incredibly difficult journey. Of course I accept your apology. Listen, you are beating yourself up too much about this. After I wrote my answers, I had already turned my mind to other things. I spent 30 seconds on the first answer and 2 minutes on the second (that you were puzzled got me :D). I rarely am a resentful person. Usually I do not react to posts missing constructive criticism (which I value highly)... but in your case, they were well written so I couldnt resist. And the word 'Chaucer'... English isnt my native language and I enjoy reading words that are so rare for me that they slip my mind. So all is good.

BTW, Im not using MEGA because I dont like Kim Dotcom. Might be a stupid reason but thats how it is. I just dont want to support any endeavour of his.

It's tremendously humbling to see gracious responses to an apology that wasn't easy to write. Sonic, Lockdown, and scorecrazy, you all have increases to your reps. Small token of gratitude.

The score is gorgeous. Very nearly worth a bout of laptop malware ;)

I know AberZombi&Flesh said he would be doing the uploads, but I don't think he seems interested in doing that anymore. Can't blame him though. I wouldn't be either. Could anyone else provide a re-up? Been trying to get my hands on a version of this score for far too long now.
