Patrick Doyle’s career has seen a surprising resurgence in the late 2000’s, propelling the classically-inclined composer to heights not reached since his days working on Shakespearean adaptations with Kenneth Branagh. His recent interpretation of the prevalent Zimmer/Remote Control tendencies in big-budget Hollywood scores “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes” and “Thor” has garnered him a new generation of fans, while providing the kind of intelligent orchestrations that highlighted his early career writing for obscure art projects. Not only that, his successful use of traditional Scottish and Irish instruments in “Quest For Camelot” (Doyle is Scottish himself) added an ethnic flair to a doomed picture that didn't deserve such a lush, ambitious score. Given this resume, it should come as no surprise that Doyle was chosen to score Disney’s “Brave”, a fable set in the highlands of Scotland.

The film music's release history is surprisingly uncomplicated. An official album release totalling over an hour - with three original songs and one source cue - presented much of the music in suite format and, rather frustratingly, not in chronological order which, given Doyle’s thematic development, offers a significant problem. Thankfully, a For Your Consideration album was commissioned for the Oscars, which offered a little over 70 minutes of Doyle’s score exclusively and in film order. A Cast & Crew album offered mostly the same contents with additional music amended to the end (although, since the C&C hasn't leaked at this time the exact nature of the additional music is unknown). Sounds like the FYC offers everything you need, right?

Well, as usual, it isn't so simple.

As is usually the case, the album versions of some cues differed from the film versions, mostly through the replacement of abrupt endings and stingers with more smoother passages. Not only that, tracks featuring vocal performances by Emma Thompson and Peigi Barker were excluded from the FYC album in favour of non-vocal versions. In all, there are about four alternate tracks from the OST that can be extracted and added onto the FYC for a fairly well-rounded presentation of around 80 minutes; pretty short considering it is a mostly-complete score, although this is, of course, excluding the songs and source cue. Assembling the FYC, alternates AND the songs and source cue from the OST leaves one with a 90 minute presentation of pretty much everything the film has to offer musically.

Included here is a reupload of the FYC score (whose original thread has sadly disappeared, although if you want to thank someone, thank Lockdown here (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/pixar-cast-crew-cd-thread-80014/24.html#post2316487) since he was apparently the first to upload it). I have included my rough edits of the four alternate tracks. By “rough edit” I mean all I did was cut the music out of the suites, without adjusting volume fluctuations or editing fade-in’s and fade-out’s (a music editor I am not). Thankfully, since I only cut the music and didn't tinker with it, there was no bitrate or quality loss whatsoever. Nevertheless, the edits are really for educational purposes only and hopefully someone more skilled than I will be able to do a much better job. The songs and source cue are included but separate from the main release since I don’t see them as really necessary. Feel free to add them in if you please. Finally, the usual plethora of alternate album covers are included (although the official green FYC cover is endearing enough for me in my personal opinion).

UPDATE: I've now included some simple fade-ins and fade-outs on the alternate cues. Again, no re-encoding so no loss in bitrate or quality whatsoever. I'm much, much happier with how they've turned out now. Strictly speaking the FYC has mostly everything but some of the alternates are interesting in and of themselves so I would recommend at least a listen.

tl;dr: The FYC version as uploaded will satisfy most people, presenting pretty much every single cue from the film in chronological order. However, if you’re interested in the album versions of the some of those cues, as well as the collection of alternate album art and the songs in one package, than look no further.

ANALYSIS (OST):

1. Touch The Sky - The first song of the film by Julie Fowlis, which plays between “Elinor’s Court” and “Secret Cakes”. None of the songs, including this one, are present on the FYC album.

2. Into The Open Air - The second song by Julie Fowlis for the film. Plays between “Hungry Mum” and “Mum Goes Wild”.

3. Learn Me Right - The song featured in the end credits by Birdy, with Mumford and Sons. Comes just before the end credits suite, which features no new material.

4. Fate & Destiny - A suite comprised of:

Fate and Destiny (start – 1:16, 16 second intro missing)
Clans Have Accepted (1:16 – 2:04)
Listen (2:04 – end)

5. The Games - Both FYC and OST versions are identical.

6. I Am Merida - A suite comprised of:

The Suitors (start – 1:01, cuts off at 1:01)
I Am Merida (1:01 – end)

7. Remember To Smile - A suite comprised of:

Remember To Smile (start – 1:06, significantly different to the FYC version, with drawn-out themes at 0:21 and 0:40)
Brawl & Brawl Some More (1:06 – end, both cues blend together seamlessly, with a less abrupt ending)

8. Merida Rides Away - A suite comprised of:

Merida Rides (start – 2:55)
Bear Transformation (2:55 – end, only features 0:56 – 2:04 snippet)

9. The Witch’s Cottage - Both FYC and OST versions are identical.

10. Song Of Mord’du - A song performed by the characters in the film, not available on the FYC album. Plays between “Witch’s Cottage” and “Tray For Mum”.

11. Through The Castle - A suite comprised of:

Castle Bear Hunt (start – 2:27)
Locked Out (2:27 – 3:29, cuts off at 1:02)
Through The Castle (3:29 – end, 13 second intro missing)

12. Legends Are Lessons - A suite comprised of:

What To Do (start – 0:58)
Breakfast Courtly Music (0:58 – 1:46, snippets missing and cuts off at 0:47)
Hungry Mum (1:46 – 2:36)
Legends Are Lessons (2:36 – end, significantly different to the FYC version, featuring more instrumentation as the music swells near the end of the cue)

13. Show Us The Way - An abridged version of “Mor’Du Attack” with snippets totalling 40 seconds missing.

14. Mum Goes Wild - A suite comprised of:

Mum Waddles Off (start – 0:29, cuts off at 0:29)
Mum Goes Wild (0:29 – 1:47)
This Means War (1:47 – end, cuts off at 1:34)

15. In Her Heart - Both FYC and OST versions are identical.

16. Noble Maiden Fair (A Mhaighdean Bhan Uasal) - FYC version is instrumental only.

17. Not Now! - Apart from being called “Bear Discovered” on the FYC album, both FYC and OST versions are identical.

18. Get The Key - A suite comprised of:

Get The Key (start – 1:35)
To The Rescue (1:35 – end, cuts off at 1:35)

19. We’ve Both Changed - A suite comprised of:

Bear Fight (start – 1:49)
All My Fault (1:49 – 4:29, FYC version is instrumental only with fewer instrumentations)
We’ve Both Changed (4:29 – end)

20. Merida’s Home - The theme featured in the trailer for the film. Apart from being called “Brave Trailer Theme” on the FYC album, both FYC and OST versions are identical.

ANALYSIS (FYC):

* - Available on both OST and FYC/C&C

** - Contains extra material not on OST

*** - Only available on FYC/C&C

**** - Alternate version available on OST

1. Little Birthday Girl (0:59)*** - Strangely absent from the OST, despite being the opening track of the film and introducing the main protagonist’s theme.
2. Your Own Bow (1:37)*** - Another curious exclusion from the OST. These first two cues put together into a suite for the first track would’ve served the album quite well.
3. Fate and Destiny (1:41)** - The first 16 seconds are missing from the OST version of this cue. Included in the “Fate & Destiny” suite.
4. Elinor’s Court (1:24)*** - Another cue completely absent from the OST. Contains hints of the theme that will eventually blossom in “Breakfast Courtly Music”.
5. Secret Cakes (0:28)*** - A short, whimsical cue missing from the OST.
6. Clans Have Accepted (0:58)* - The second track in the “Fate & Destiny” suite. No differences between albums.
7. Four Sons’ Tale (1:01)*** - A quiet theme missing entirely from the OST.
8. Listen (2:16)* - The third and final track in the “Fate & Destiny” suite. No differences between albums.
9. Clans Arrive (0:54)*** - An extension of the ideas first heard in “Elinor’s Court”, which, like that track, is absent from the OST.
10. Remember To Smile (1:07)**** - The first track of the “Remember To Smile” suite. The OST version of this cue differs from the FYC/C&C version, with smoother transitions and extended performances of the themes.
11. Lords’ Entrance (0:36)*** - A pompous fanfare missing from the OST.
12. The Suitors (1:35)** - The first track of the “I Am Merida” suite. 1:01 onwards contains material not heard on the OST.
13. Brawl (0:36)** - This track is seamlessly joined with “Brawl Some More” as the second track of the “Remember To Smile” suite. The abrupt ending is missing from the OST.
14. Brawl Some More (0:48)** - This track is seamlessly joined with “Brawl” as the second track of the “Remember To Smile” suite. The dissonant ending is, again, missing from the OST, changed to a more low-key ending.
15. The Games (1:55)* - Both tracks are exactly the same on the OST and FYC/C&C.
16. Archery Competition (1:04)*** - Not available on the OST.
17. I Am Merida (1:33)* - The second and final track of the “I Am Merida” suite. No differences between albums.
18. Merida Rides (3:01)* - The first track of the “Merida Rides Away” suite. No differences between bootlegs.
19. Why Here? (0:18)*** - An extremely short track not heard on the OST.
20. Witch’s Cottage (4:26)* - Does the OST version being called “The Witch’s Cottage” count as a difference? No? Okay then. No differences between albums.
21. Tray For Mum (0:36)*** - Another short cue absent from the OST.
22. Bear Transformation (2:38)** - The second and final track of the “Merida Rides Away” suite. The OST version is missing the first minute and the final half-a-minute of music.
23. Party (0:12)*** - A short stinger using the rowdy Mor'Du song theme. Not available on the OST.
24. Castle Bear Hunt (2:37)* - The first track of the “Through The Castle” suite. No differences between albums.
25. Through The Castle (1:19)** - The third and final track of the “Through The Castle” suite. The first 13 seconds is missing from the OST.
26. Locked Out (1:34)** - The second track of the “Through The Castle” suite. 1:02 onwards contains music not on the OST.
27. Mum Waddles Off (0:51)** - The first track of the “Mum Goes Wild” suite. 0:29 onwards contains music not on the OST.
28. Mend the Bond (2:13)*** - A surprising exclusion from the OST, given this song’s length and use of themes.
29. What to Do (1:09)* - The first track of the “Legends Are Lessons” suite. No differences between albums.
30. Noble Maiden Fair (Instrumental Version) (1:52)**** - The OST version features vocals from Emma Thompson and Peigi Barker.
31. Breakfast Courtly Music (0:58)** - The second track of the “Legends Are Lessons” suite. The OST version has various snippets missing.
32. Hungry Mum (0:53)* - The third track of the “Legends Are Lessons” suite. No differences between albums.
33. Mum Goes Wild (1:26)* – The second track of the “Mum Goes Wild” suite. No differences between albums.
34. Mor’Du Attack (4:24)** - The OST contains an abridged version of this cue with 40 seconds missing entitled “Show Us The Way”.
35. This Means War (1:43)** - The third and final track of the “Mum Goes Wild” suite. 1:34 onwards contains music not on the OST.
36. Legends Are Lessons (1:33)**** - The fourth and final track of the “Legends Are Lessons” suite. The OST version of this cue differs dramatically from the FYC/C&C version, with more instrumentations and a more symphonic ending.
37. In Her Heart (2:41)* - Both tracks are exactly the same on the OST and FYC/C&C.
38. Bear Discovered (3:39)* - Also known as “Not Now!” on the OST. Apart from that, no differences between albums.
39. Get The Key (1:41)* - The first track of the “Get The Key” suite. No differences between albums.
40. To The Rescue (2:00)** - The second and final track of the “Get The Key” suite. 1:35 onwards contains music not on the OST.
41. Bear Fight (1:56)* - The first track of the “We’ve Both Changed” suite. No differences between albums.
42. All My Fault (Instrumental Version) (2:51)**** - The second track of the “We’ve Both Changed” suite. The OST version features vocals from Emma Thompson and Peigi Barker as a reprise of the “Noble Maiden Fair” cue, as well as some extra instrumentation.
43. We’ve Both Changed (1:05)* - The third and final track of the “We’ve Both Changed” suite. No differences between albums.
44. Brave Trailer Theme (1:32)* - Also known as “Merida’s Home” on the OST. Apart from that, no differences between albums.

Can you upload to a site that doesn't require you to log on with facebook or something or is full of 3rd party addons? How about to MEGA or something? :)

Wow. See, I wish more people could do this for some other scores. I've not yet seen Brave, and all I have is the FYC. I've listened to the first 5 cues or so, they're nice. I just wish this could be done with bigger profile films. However, this does look intriguing and I must grab it. Thanks for doing this

I did a set of this for myself ages ago, creating a more or less complete score. I dunno about how completely accurate, I followed the guide here: Chronological Scores / Soundtracks: Brave (http://chrono-score.blogspot.com/2013/01/brave.html)

---------- Post added at 10:59 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:58 AM ----------

Came out to about 85 minutes. I did not get too obsessive though.

---------- Post added at 11:04 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:59 AM ----------

I used all flac sources for Brave, and converted to 320. (I almost never keep lossless). I have similar sets made for The Little Mermaid, Mulan, Tangled and Tarzan. All more or less complete. (Score and songs mixed following similar editing guides, though I never share. Embarrassed, editing is truly new to me...)

---------- Post added at 11:06 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:04 AM ----------

I did not keep album version as Alternates though since I really don't get that.....serious about having every last cue no matter how similar. With the album versions, most of the tracks are **nearly** identical so for my uses, redundant...

Unfortunately, I won't be uploading to MEGA again for a while since they recently flagged my account and deleted everything. Kind of disheartening to see everything deleted off of there.

I can, on the other hand, upload to Mediafire if that helps. :)

Yeah, in my Armageddon thread I've still got the Mega link there...if you try to access it it gives you this.

The associated user account has been terminated due to multiple violations of our Terms and Services.

Kind of a bummer since I know a lot of people here like Mega. The bad news is that k meyer is right, despite this Mega still is one of the better ones, especially with Rapidshare going down the toilet in quality.

That's the big reason why I use 4shared. It's a bit of a hassle due to the account requirement, but you can choose to have you files not displayed by search, which seems to aid in masking your files from the bots. Or something. I dunno, I don't into computarss. So yeah, sorry about that but it looks like I'll be using 4shared (and Mediafire here and there) for the foreseeable future.
