Dressed To Kill (EXPANDED)

Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume 246
Date: 1980
Tracks: 24
Time = 58:51

At last! Popular Pino Donaggio score for Brian De Palma horror thriller gets brand-newly remixed, remastered & expanded CD! Michael Caine, Angie Dickinson, Nancy Allen bring delicious psycho-killer tale to life with terrifying results. Donaggio matches mayhem with his most vivid, intense film score to date. Gorgeous main theme plays in direct contrast to suspense material. Deserving spotlight is rhythmic slashing motif, scored for orchestra with frightening trombone glissandi stealing the thunder. Though present on original 1980 two-track mixes, striking color was somehow diminished. Brand new 2013 mix from newly-discovered actual 2" 24-track session masters finally unleashes chilling trombone color at last. Session masters (long considered lost when repeated searches kept leading to partial outtake rolls only) also allow Intrada to premiere dramatic material associated with Peter (Keith Gordon) assembling, mounting his surveillance camera to scope out sinister activities. Many other cues make world premiere appearance, including further exploration of dynamic action material. Two tracks were vaulted in two-track stereo only, the remainder were vaulted in 24-track formats. Together these pristeen-condition masters allow rich, rewarding expansion of what is generally thought of as Donaggio's most terrifying work. Informative notes by Scott Bettencourt, dramatic art design by Joe Sikoryak complete exciting package! Natale Massara conducts. Intrada Special Collection release available while quantities and interest remain!

DRESSED TO KILL
Composed by PINO DONAGGIO
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 246

While director Brian DePalma has worked with several different composers, it is Pino Donaggio to whom he has returned time and again since they first worked together on the directors 1976 masterpiece Carrie. Donaggios romantic, melodic style is the perfect complement to De Palmas tensely erotic visuals, which inspired the composer to write what is arguably his finest score for the 1980 thriller Dressed to Kill. Donaggio provided lush orchestrations featuring an impressive variety of memorable, fully developed melodies.

To bring this expanded edition of the score to CD, Intrada returned to the 2? 24-track session masters and newly remixed everything, creating brand new two-track stereo mixes for this release. Almost every cue was present on these elements, stored in beautiful condition in the MGM vaults; only three cues (tracks 1, 2 & 24) needed to be mastered from the existing two-track stereo mixes made back in 1980. While not every cue was accounted for, this release features a bulk of the previously unreleased music.

In the film, Kate Miller (Angie Dickinson), a dissatisfied Long Island house wife, turns an afternoon museum visit into a richly satisfying sexual encounter with a complete stranger. Afterwards, she is brutally murdered in the elevator of her lover's appartment building. Liz Blake (Nancy Allen), a high-priced call girl, is the only witness and she teams with Kates grieving son Peter, a budding computer genius. Realizing that the killer is one of Dr. Elliotts patients, the pair hatches a plot to track her down through the doctors records.

For those looking to upgrade from the original Varese album, while it is an upgrade the mixing on both albums differ to the point that both should be kept and enjoyed for their own merits. I rather like the Varese album since some of the solo woodwind sections are mixed with a bit more detail than the Intrada album. The Intrada album is nice for the action pieces but I felt a bit underwhelmed by their mixing of some cues. A minor quip for a major project.

Two cues are missing that I noticed: the shower sting as the dream rapist pops up behind the showering beauty in the opening scene. Also, the haunting vocal piece that plays during the callgirl's erotic story in Dr. Elliott's office is still missing and replaced with romantic pianos/strings ala the original album.

It was nice to have the previously unreleased cues for sure and the great expansion on The Asylum was excellent. I believe the finale of that cue is a tad bit more expanded even from the film on the Intrada release.

I've realized the reason for my displeasure with this album: lack of reverb. I am currently uploading my deluxe edition version which adds the missing reverb and features some remixing to bring out more detail from the woodwinds. Luckily, they are mixed in the right channel which for some strange reason is undermixed in my opinion so I boosted the right channel in a few places (the tracks Bad Night, The Museum, The Forgotten Ring, Death in the Elevator, etc.). Look for the post with more details on it.

I have found that I cannot open the Mega download when completed. A mirror would be most appreciated and if without too much trouble it is hoped.
