Thanks for sharing this!

Humor me while I vent for a moment: I'm as big a Jablonsky fan as any and was looking forward to this score. Thought he'd really break free from his recent generic sci-fi scores, which are all pretty much interchangeable. Yet here's a 1940s gangster film...whose score sounds like it could be from "Transformers 4" -- and even seems to borrow heavily from "Inception" (aside from the last track which is clearly modeled from "The Untouchables"). Here's hoping there's something new in his next one....

Maybe the reshoots could have affected the score, too bad that Burwell's score was rejected.

That's too bad. I was pissed when I heard they might replace the Grauman's Chinese Theatre scene, but at the same time I understand why. I forgot to check and see if they actually did replace it, so I was not happy when that scene did not occur in the film. Instead it was replaced by the Chinatown sequence. Hopefully it will be a deleted scene on the Blu-ray or there will be an extended cut. I enjoyed the score, but there will always be haters who say Jablonsky has no talent. (Not pointing any fingers or calling anyone out)

No offense taken. Being a fan myself, I think Jablonsky is very talented; I just wish he were more dynamic. It could be the case in "Gangster Squad" that he wasn't allowed to open up: the producers may have wanted a percussive, contemporary score, so his hands were tied. This happens often and is what probably happened with "Battleship" -- the filmmakers demanded another Transformers score.

The producers/director surely wanted a score that sounded like Jablonskys other work, thats why they hired him and he gave them one...thats how showbiz works...

I just heard it, disappointed... I love Jablonsky (The island, transformers trilogy, your highness), but battleship was too much a "i try to replicate the TF 3 concept'' and Gangster Squad is even worst..... :(

You took that as a comparison? Wow. Umm...no, I'm not comparing anyone to anybody. LA Confidential is a 1940's Gangster movie WITH a 40's style noir-like score. Chillax

So is Goldsmith's Chinatown, and as music score it evokes more the noir-like aspects than the LA Confidential score, in my opinion.

I heard this score now and to put a TF sounding score in a period film like this one is just in appropriate and awful to me. I wouldn't blame the composer though because he might not have the freedom to go where he envisioned it but his boss told him to do so. Another "Battlesh!t" score. Sorry for that. Oh no not really.

Mr. Charles
01-15-2013, 03:34 AM
Damn, you guys are a tough crowd. Someone should ask Hybrid on HZ.com if Steve had little control over what made it to the OST, much like Battleship, as people are saying. I hear the sessions are way better than the OST (Battleship, I mean)

Drunkenmunkey
01-15-2013, 04:37 AM
OST has a better listening experience, Sessions contain more of the eargasm that we need. (kinda the same thing but whatever)

The sessions have more empty spaces in between

I'd second the view of Chinatown, and also recommend the score to the Rockstar Game LA Noire.

Well, yes, I did, and I'm sorry for my misinterpretation. I'ts because I believe that LA Confidential has some modern scoring technics, but made right.

I considered making a cuelist in chronological order, if anybody is interested in it. It would contain info on which track was used where and how much is missing.
