HOUSESITTER (unreleased score by Miles Goodman) (Lossless/FLAC)

A Steve Martin/Goldie Hawn comedy from 1992 with Hawn moving into Martin's empty house and pretending to be his new wife. Naturally, the neighbors find Hawn a kooky delight and eventually Martin falls for her too. Director Frank Oz seems to have a fondness for quirky rom-coms and usually gets Miles Goodman to compose the music (as with Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, What About Bob, etc). For Housesitter, Goodman created a score surprisingly different from the others, one filled with breezy jazz and a playful take on Baroque music with brass and harpsichord.

35 untitled tracks (some short!) totaling about 44 minutes.
Good stereo sound with no dialog or sfx.
Tau Analyzer and EAC indicate all tracks to be Lossless.
Disc was ripped to FLAC using XLD.
Disc label reads: Collector2Collector CD #20062

...can it be downloaded?

The download link and password is shown in the Spoiler just below the CD artwork. The format is FLAC. I see this is your first posting here. Once you download the folder, do you have the means to extract the individual tracks that are in it, and do you have the means to convert them to another format like Mp3 or Aiff or Wav, assuming you don't want FLAC?

Very kind of you to take the time to offer help, yepsa. Most vets here seem kinda short with noobs. But I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside.

Thanks so much for the advice - I'm a bit of a novice at all this, though enjoying myself!! I was able to download the file and it is saved in my downloads but don't know how to change the file into something that will play on the computer - mp3, WAV/WMA etc. Any advice? I use Any Video Converter normally but this won't handle this type of downloaded file. Phil.

I use xACT: xact.scottcbrown.org (http://xact.scottcbrown.org/)

You just open the Lossy tab, drag in whatever files to convert, click "Encode" and specify a directory/folder you want to save the converted MP3s.

Phil: So it sounds like you simply have the zipped archive sitting on your computer. Before you can convert the audio files inside the archive you are going to need a program to open it. People here can help, but you need to tell us if you are using a MAC or PC.

I'm using a PC with Windows XP - thanks for your kind attention. Phil

There is a free unzipping (extracting) program for the PC called 7-zip (see link below) which will open any of the archives you download (not just from me).

click this link for 7-zip: 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/)

Once you extract the individual audio tracks from the archive you will need to convert them, unless they are already in a format you can use. If they aren't, you need a conversion program. Since I am on a MAC, I cannot advise you on which is best for Windows XP, but if you do a Google search by typing in something like "convert flac to mp3 for PC" (or to WAV) you can see what's out there. You can also ask people here what they use.

FLAC is a "lossless" format like WAV (or AIFF if you're on a Mac) in that none of the audio quality of the original is lost, but FLAC does so in a much smaller file size than WAV or AIFF. That is FLAC's big advantage! The current downside is that the FLAC format isn't accepted everywhere, like iTunes. Thus many people need to convert FLAC to something else.

Converting FLAC files to WAV or AIFF will retain the same audio quality as the original (since all 3 are equally lossless), but the file size will go up. Converting FLAC to a "lossy" format like Mp3 (and AAC and others) means some of the audio quality will be lost, but the file size will go down considerably. It all depends on what you need. The beauty of starting with FLAC is that you are starting out with the best quality, in a manageable file size, and everyone can then convert the FLAC files to whatever they want.

Dear yepsa, thanks so much for your patient advice but I have to say I am having to give up as I am unable to get the file to transfer properly. I downloaded WinZip to open the FLAC files and they appear nicely in track order but with "0" bytes in each. I uploaded AVS Audio converter to change FLAC to mp3 or similar but to no avail. It is as if AVS does not recognise that these files have anything in them - if indeed they do!! I'm not as up to speed as you are so at this point I will graciously give in and retire hurt! It would have been far easier if somebody had uploaded this excellent soundtrack as WAV in the first place. Ah well, best wishes, Phil.

It would have been far easier if somebody had uploaded this excellent soundtrack as WAV in the first place.

You have to be considerate of what uploaders have to deal with: the file size of audio tracks in WAV format would be double what they are in FLAC. Many upload services not only limit the size of the file that can be uploaded, but uploaders are only given a certain amount of storage space, and WAV files (or AIFF) would take up twice the space. Downloaders of WAV/AIFF files would also have to wait about double the time to download the files too.

I am on a Mac and have not used WinZip, so do not fully understand the problems you are having. Are you having the same problems with other soundtracks that are being offered in FLAC, or just "Housesitter"?

In another forum I have asked for help from PC users and will share what they reply with. Hopefully, something will work.

Hi, this is my first FLAC download so am unsure but feel that there may be something weird about THIS download. When I unzip the file it asks for a password (but I have never made one) and when I use a converter to change the file type (say to mp3) it simply looks like the converter doesn't think there is anything there for it to convert even though I can see the list of tracks opened by the unzip-per! Thanks for your persistence. Phil.

1. You cannot use WinZip to open this. You have to use 7-Zip - which can be found here. http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sevenzip/7z920.exe
2. The password is crybaby - as specified in the first post.

Download 7-zip. Extract everything. Stick it through whatever conversion package you like. (That said, your music player should be able to play FLAC without converting to anything. What program are you using for playback?)

Thanks Tangotreats - what a plonker I am, ignoring the password which is so obviously there!! Idiot! However, we're not over yet. I have now extracted the files as flac. They won't play on either Widows Media Player or Real Player on my computer or laptop (XP and Windows 7 respectively) and AVS Audio Converter which I downloaded the other day won't change them to mp3 or similar, saying "file access error". But am I disheartened? A Bit - but I'm going to win! What porgramme do YOU use to change FLAC to mp3/wma etc? Obviously AVS is not much good at it, unless the FLAC files are damaged in some way but I can't tell that. Phil.

Dear Yepsa, amoungst all these technical questions (nothing these guys couldn't work out using google!!) I would like to extend my DEEPEST GRATITUDE. This film has a very special place in my heart, and it's quirky, jazzy, rousing score too. Me and an old, dear friend used to watch this film a lot together, drunk, sober, we would laugh and we would cry - I had heard of a collection of audio from the film floating around on the net for a while - but however much I searched I could never quite get anywhere. Anyway, today on a whim, I typed 'Housesitter Soundtrack' into google and a link appeared to your wonderful, generous post. I don't mean to gush - but these tracks mean such a great deal, and I am now able to revisit my memories in an entirely new way. THANK YOU. Music is truely a miracle, and you have facilitated that for us. THANK YOU!

What a wonderful forum this is, and what a wonderful poster. You are so nice to the newcomers. I am, fortunately, familiar with FLAC/extraction/etc. I will extend a huge thank you for the link, since this is my favorite film ever and the score is so important yet has never been released. And separately just state my respect for the forum, this thread, and you! :-D <3

EDIT: Oh, and I just so happen to be a huge final fantasy fan--particularly IX (so underrated) and X.
