What recording can a record label claim legal rights to?

I recently posted 2 scores: An agency promo of John Debney’s "Bruce Almighty", and the recording sessions to Debney’s "Evan Almighty." At some point Varese bought the rights to release some of this music on their own label, and an ffshriner politely reminded me that because of this my posts were in violation of ffshrine policy.

My thinking was that a label could only claim rights to a recording they actually released. For example, Intrada could claim rights to their recording of "Until September" but would have no rights to the exact same score Kritzerland was also allowed to release. And vice versa. Since the Agency Promo and the Recording sessions I posted above are not Varese releases, does Varese have any say in them being posted here? Please chime in with your thoughts!

update May 9th: It has been pointed out that while my argument is technically correct, anything connected to Varese cannot be posted here. Apparently it was already discussed prior to my participating. In respect for that decision, though I don’t actually agree with it, I have removed the links and asked to be PM’d. Live and learn! I would think that if the original soundtrack was VA then yes the recording sessions for the score should need to be PM’d to receive the links. Just my thought.

Well, this has been discussed ad infinitum. But, site policy seems to be that if Varese has had anything to do with a release, and no other label afterward, then nothing of that project can be openly posted. PM for links is used all the time and the last time I checked, admin was allowing that.

As to VS has any legal right to unpublished material, I dunno. But, in order to keep things quieter, the site seems to just roll with it….
