As sad as this sounds i did some "research" & I found that the holes are to decrease the weight of the sword I dont know the details but it’s supposed to let air flow through it or something like that lol.

Anyway, I thought they were for materia, cause it looks it got just 2 holes and it is how many materias actually you can equip on Butster Sword.

If you look in pictures with the entire party in it, you can see that Yuffie, Aeris, Cid and Cait Sith have little green sphere on they weapons. Sorry i didn’t have a picture.

Yeah, I always thought those two holes were for materia. They could also be to decrease weight, so the sword would be lighter to swing, thus meaning faster slashes. But those two small holes in that location can’t reduce weight by that much. So I guess those are for materia, or just for show.
