Wand’rin’ Star is the third of three compilations from Bear Family Records devoted to music from western films (My Rifle, My Pony and Me and From Alamo to El Dorado are the previous volumes). The songs are a mixture of commercial recordings and performances lifted directly from films. James Stewart’s "You Can’t Get Far Without a Railroad" from the 1957 film Night Passage, for example, features dialogue and extraneous noise throughout the song. Gene Pitney’s "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" and Claude King’s "The Comancheros" were written for, but not used in, films of the same name. Despite the overarching western theme, the music is varied, from orchestral themes (Victor Young’s "The Call of the Far Away Hills") and pop songs (Peggy Lee’s "Johnny Guitar") to the more rugged sounds of singing cowboys and mainstream country stars. The handful of celebrity vocal performances by Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum, and Lee Marvin (who sang "Wand’rin’ Star" in Paint Your Wagon) are fun, and collectors will appreciate the more obscure commercial recordings by Rusty Draper, Gordon MacRae, the Prairie Chiefs, and the Lancers. Spanning the years 1953-1969, Wand’rin’ Star is a treat for western film fans and a strong entry in this lavishly produced series.

Many Thanks for this one as well!
