Great Movie, Great music. But anyone have any clues why Morricone’s music was there, it’s beautiful as same as Umebayashi’s score from other movie but Deborah’s Theme is obviously recognized for fan worldwide. Something usually Tarantino’s style, but I’m not sure it’s typical for WKW.

in an interview Wong mentioned the Grandmaster was in a way a tribute to Once Upon a Time In America, even the poster gives a hint with "once upon a time in Kung fu" and "presented by Scorsese". BTW the end credit shows there are also use of Bruno Coulais and Joe Hisaishi’s music 🙂

Indeed, he took some musics from "Les rivires Pourpres" (Crimson Rivers I think) by Mathieu Kassovitz :
– The Golden Pavillon (I think they arranged it for the film here)
– The fight Scene between Ma San & Gong Er in the train station
Joe Hisaishi music’s takes place juste before the fight, when the guy with the monkey fights Ma San’s guys. Then you have again a part of the Golden Pavillon ("Le Tlphrique", track 14) then you have "La poursuite" (track 18 from the rivires Pourpres).
WKW usually uses non-original musics in his films. The best example for me is the main theme of In the Mood for Love, taken from a film also scored by Shigeru Umebayashi. He used it to give the rythm to his crew and his actors while on shooting…Then why not take it as main theme ? In 2046 the musics have more meanings while watching the films where they come from. He plays with them to guide us trough the story (you can find more details about the music in the Press Folder/Press Book of 2046).
