My advice is to actually pay attention to the story the next time you play the game. It is not an overall complicated story, so paying attention is the least you could do. 🙁
What are your levels? Have you completed the Chocobo sidequest? My advice is to get to level 55, and finish the Chocobo sidequest to get the many rare items and weapons.

It’s on the Outer Continent, in one of the many quicksand pits on the east side. I think the one farthest from where you land is the correct one; if you go in the wrong one, you’ll have to fight an Antlion-like creature.
