This may seem like a dumb question but…..

…are the likes of Transformers, Thundercats, The Mysterious cities of gold and Ulysses 31 considered as anime?

Just curious.

Well, I consider Mysterious Cities of Gold anime myself, in that not only is it’s art style very much anime-influenced, it was a European/Japanese co-production, so that’s enough to make it anime in my book.

As for the others, Transformers was originally a Japanese anime before Hasbro brought it out in the US and elsewhere in the mid ’80s, but as far as the other two go, I wouldn’t really consider them anime per se, but more anime inspired. But I guess there will be a lot of people who would disagree with me there..

I don’t think they are animes… Except the early <3Transformers<3. I’m not sure about Mysterious Cities Of Gold though…

i’d consider thundercats and silverhawks anime. i heard it was american writing/scripts using japanese art talent. more specifically, stories being sent overseas, japan makes an episode, sends it back, and it airs.

Quite a large amount of American TV shows are/were sent overseas to be animated, and they don’t all have that crazy japanesy look to them.

not the crazy style you mention. but the tried and true style is definately there.

examples being GIjoe and the like. it would be wrong to assume all anime has to have that classic big eye thing. even gargoyles almost seems anime. just look at the human character faces. x-men might as well be in there too. you can tell by the eyes and the way chins and noses are drawn. some chiseling here and there. refined. clean. all the makings of good japanese animation.

face structures stand out to me the most in such examples and facial expressions. those are what convince me.

compare gargoyles, gijoe, captain planet, x-men and all those type of shows to armored trooper votoms and city hunter, and maybe you’ll see my point.

What I mean is that enough different kinds of cartoons have had animation work done overseas that saying they have anime styles or tells is kind of meaningless.

oh. hmm. that’s pretty interesting. now i’m curious about true blue american artwork. what i understand from what your saying, is that perhaps everything we know and love, was prolly "anime" to begin with, and we never knew about it. so now i’m left wondering, what ISN’T done overseas now? o_o

i can only think of old shows like duck tales, darkwing duck, bonkers, anamaniacs, tiny toons, and so on. other than that…i’m out of shows. O_o heck. those were prolly done overseas too! omg! whats left??

i don’t really find thundercats as anime and transformers are like on the fence. also i’ve never heard of the mysterious cities of gold or ulysses 31.

By the purest definition of anime, it covers any animated work, regardless of its country of origin.

Never seen mysterious cities of gold and ulysses 31..but transformers and thundercats…old school anime…anything with the modern japanesey sharp or chibi look is anime..imho..

I screwed up the sentence. It should be "main country for cheap animation is S. Korea". They work for less money than US animators.
