How do you create dolby files? CAn you link me to any tutorials you have found particularly good. I want to upscale from FLAC to 5.1 DTS or Dolby. But have been really unseccesful

What’s needed is software to allows the editing of 6 channels to mix a 5.1 sound file. Most decent packages allow waveforms of between 1 to 8 channels to be worked on. If it’s necessary to have the audio in Dolby form for whatever reason, some audio editors may also have the option to save files in the AC-3 format. If not, a converter which can take a 6 channel wav and make it into an AC-3 file will be needed. There are different types of surround audio. The classic setup is the front and rear, centre and low frequency channels.

The tricky bit is actually editing the mix. This will require a fair amount of experimentation and creativity. 🙂

I experimented with stereo to 5.1 upmixing for years. The problem I found is that the surround channels basically mimic the front left and right minus some center channel bleed. It’s hard to create good center and surround channel data. I haven’t got to download this yet but how does it sound to those whom have heard it?

Still not understanding the process for this work.

Is this 2.0 upmixed to 5.1?

I find some DSP’s help in creating something.
Not discreet though.
The work for making a clean, discreet 5.1 is too demanding.

There’s even a Dolby Neural Upmix (2.0to5.1) DSP that helps a bit.
There are even old, free DSP’s that do the same. Just differently.

I think playing with crossfeed is the way to go.

One of the reasons this unofficial mix of T1 came about was thanks to the official DTS surround release of T2. It’s crazy, I know. I personally didn’t like the way the soundtrack sounded, and having looked at the waveform, my suspicions of where it all went wrong were proved correct. It appears the DTS version was simply created by taking the stereo track from the OST CD and used as the Front channels in the surround version. The rear channels were the same except they were severely time shifted in order to create an artificial reverb effect – you know, when it feels like there’s something wrong with your head – you’re kind of pulled to one side. There ought to be a law against that. All in all, the DTS release was at best nothing special and at worst disappointing – you’re better of trying some of the DSP effects on the surround amp with the stereo source. I’d also add the official stereo CD is probably the best source for this music theme and score. The only way to get truly discreet effects is for someone with the multi-track source to create a truly stunning 5.1 or 7.1 mix.

So what’s all this got to do with T1? Unless I’m mistaken, there never was a 5.1 version of the soundtrack. Actually, all I was concerned with was the main theme, not the score. But hey-ho, in for a penny, in for a pound. Also worth mentioning is that the T1 OST had poor dynamics to begin with and I thought I’d give it a go to upgrade the audio and see if it would sound better, more cinematic in surround. Last year I beefed up Star Trek Nemesis according to my own personal taste, and I thought I might try the same again with T1, and also T2 (see the Terminator 2 Judgment Day OST Dolby Surround (unofficial mix) thread – Thread 192247). Hopefully, listeners will find both T1 & T2 more cinematic in presentation.
