The Miracle Worker

Despite the fact Anne Bancroft had won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for her performance in the Broadway production, United Artists executives wanted a bigger name cast as Anne Sullivan in the film adaptation. They offered to budget the film at $5 million if Elizabeth Taylor was cast but only $500,000 if director Arthur Penn insisted on using Bancroft. Penn, who had directed the stage production, remained loyal to his star. The move paid off, and Bancroft won an Oscar for her role in the film.
Also despite the fact that Patty Duke had played Helen Keller in the play, she almost didn’t get the part. The reason was that Duke, 15 years old at the time, was too old to portray a seven-year old girl, but after Bancroft was cast as Anne, Duke was chosen to play Helen in the movie and won an Oscar for her role.

Laurence Rosenthal

If my memory is correct, this was part of a Rosenthal limited promotional release done many years ago. It was not recorded in a studio but possibly in a hotel near his home. There is some subdued noise chairs moving, instruments tapping but Rosenthal enjoyed the informality of this orchestra playing one of his favorite scores. Music that was not even nominated for an Academy Award yet, in my opinion, ranks right next to the equally marvelous To Kill A Mockingbird when it comes to beauty & emotional impact.

1) Prologue: Helene Alone 2.21
2) Annies Train-Ride 3.02
3) Contact of Hands 2.01
4) The Mischief-Maker 4.40
5) Helens Mother 1.11
6) The Garden House 2.49
7) Annies Bad Dream of Her Own Childhood 1.58
8) The Lullaby 1.59
9) Teaching 4.46
10) Reach, Reach! 3.57
11) Captain Keller Consoles 0.48
12) The Miracle at the Pump 2.49
13) Epilogue: Helen with Her Teacher 2.06

I had been impressed by Rosenthal’s "Who’ll Stop the Rain".
But his score for "The Miracle Worker" is a superb symphony,
full of passion and emotion.
Thank you very much for the pleasure and the knowledge, Phideas.
