***SPOILERS.***

Cloud. A moody teenager with a dark past that he doesn’t fully understand.

Squall. A moody teenager with a dark past that he doesn’t fully understand.

These were the first two Final Fantasy heroes I came across in my gaming tenure. They were quite similar in how they were a little standoffish, a little unsure of their companions at certain times, and yet during the game they developed to come to care for their friends.

Zidane, however, was a different character from the start. He wanted to help out everyone. He was light-hearted, cracking jokes, chasing after the princess. He threw himself into everything he did 100%, without regard for himself if it came down to helping out his friends. He was a refreshing breath of air to the game when compared to the previous heroes.

Anyone agree or disagree?

I remember someone, who was it again, posting: "I hate Garland, he almost turned Zidane into a Squall!"

And yes, I thought indeed it was refreshing to have a cheerful and optimistic hero. His carefree attitude made this game fun to play. He did face gloomy situations and learned confusing, shocking things about himself, but he took it lightly all in all, and did not let these things disturb his life style. Whoo!
Actually, he met his maker and he learned the reason of his existence. He just did not care, and chose to go his own way. Thats inspiring.

It was also easier for me to relate to this main character. Compaired to Squall, for example. Id have acted a lot differently if in his shoes, I can tell you… o__o

I did spend a lot of FFVII and FFVIII wanting to bitchslap the angst out of Cloud and Squall, particularly Squall so, yes, Zidane was refreshing.

To be honest though, although he was preferrable to his angst-o-rama predecessors I didn’t like his characters very much, he was too much like the obligatory hyper teen girl (Yuffie, Rikku, Selphie) which are the more annoying characters of the FFs.

Indeed. Less is more. But overall I would have to argee that Zidane’s personality was a nice change from the norm.

I have to agree as much as I hate to admit it, those were dark ass times the FF7-8 eras. Im happy that FF9 had some laughs and jokes and didnt take itself too seriously, I hate to say it but hey FF9 is one of the best FF games to date, for a game that was made a tribute to the days of yore it really made a name for itself.

I did find it kind of refreshing, I did find the whole self-centered attitude to get old, I mean, sure, it was fine for maybe 1 of them, it was okay by me for Cloud to do so in FFVII, but it was just the repeat in FFVIII by Squall that got annoying to me O_o, personally, I think that FFIX was a little TO refreshing, I thought it was just childish, a good game, but childish, I mean, it is rated Teen afterall O_o…

I thought they were annoying. The characters all got on my nerves at some point during the game. Especially Steiner. I just wanted to drop him in a lake and watch him try to swim in that big beefy armor of his.

Huh? So are VII and VIII and X also for that matter.

I thought Zidane was kind of annoying to tell you the truth. But I think all 3 characters helped craft all 3 stories in a good way. Ya know, help the storyline become it was, especially in FF7 and FF9.

Old skewl.

Please don’t dig up 4 year old threads, geez D:

Heh. I totally agree. I would like to add, though, a request not to abuse the "Report" button. When you click on Report, it sends an e-mail to anyone who’s a moderator of the section, who then has to deal with it. If somebody’s blatantly spamming, or trolling, fine, go ahead, Report away. But we get n00bs who revive old threads every so often — I don’t think it generally merits the use of the Report button — somebody will find it and take care of it sooner or later.
