I know this is trivial stuff, but as I grew up with Star Wars and fell in love with the scores at an early age, and forming a life long dedication and appreciation for Williams music, I felt I should comment on this latest bit of Star Wars geekdom and express my disappointment.

I may be a bit late to this news, but I was dispirited to read that the recording sessions have begun for The Force Awakens without The London Symphony Orchestra!

The three month recording schedule in tandem with SFX editing meant that it was not possible to record at Abbey Road Studios with the LSO.

Whilst I respect the musicianship of the LA session musicians and appreciate that Williams has worked with them on many occasions, I feel that the mighty, iconic sound of LSO and the uniqueness in using the symphony orchestra for Star Wars set the scores apart from other films.

Williams excels when scoring for this large ensemble and the sound is intrinsic to the Star Wars saga.

I am of course still excited to hear new music by my favourite film composer, but this news has deflated my excitement somewhat.

I’d like to hear others opinions.

The recordings are done. And apparently they used the LA orchestra because Williams doesn’t travel anymore.

Don’t worry. Desplat will definitely record his score for Rogue One with LSO 😀 He loves them! 😉

Did you hear the (new-ish) iconic main theme in the 3rd trailer released yesterday? I think Williams has got this covered 😉

Williams is still recording music as far as I’m aware. Just last week, Doug Adams (Author of The Music of The Lord of the Rings) posted an image of Williams with his brothers at the latest session for the film.

So far most of the music in the trailers has been rehashes of past themes with extra doodling from other composers.

According to JJ Abrams speaking at D23, the music in the trailers is new material written by Williams.
