Thanks. I just listened to the first CD and it’s great as so often with Bruce Broughton ("Silverado" and "Young Sherlock Holmes" are among my favorite 80s scores). Do you – by any chance – happen to have the Intrada releases of Broughton’s "Roughing It" and "This Girl For Hire"? Or does anybody know where to find it?

Thanks, and thanks for the liner note images.

Coincidentally heard an NPR interview yesterday with some expert on various compositions commissioned for the Olympics over the past century. Can’t recall all the trivia; I just dig it when composers get any major press.

The First Olympics – Athens 1896 was a mini-series directed by Alvin Rakoff and screened on NBC channel. Its main figures were David Ogden Stiers, Angela Lansbury, Honor Blackman, David Caruso and others. The score to this mini-series was written by one of the fastest working Hollywood composers – Bruce Broughton.

According to the scores title, it is easy to predict that it must have been cheering, uplifting, motivating, optimistic and energetic. And it is so with no doubts. It is necessary to write that the release is divided into two parts – CD 1: Complete Score (Part One – The Training, Part Two – The Events) and CD 2: Palm Court Music, Fanfares & Marches and Producers 1984 Demo Suite (unique takes & special 24-track remixes). CD 1 includes so-called background music, the latter disc – source music. Apart from original grand fanfares, eerie harmonies and lavish marches, there are some traditional pieces – God Save the Queen, John Stafford Smiths Star-Spangled Banner, John Mouchlianitis March: Athens, 1895 and Nikolaos Mantzaros Hymn to Liberty. Especially audible are references to Irish, Italian and Greek national music. Here are bunch of solemn movements and very accessible melodies, not to mention the leitmotiv, being one of the most memorable I have ever heard. The score is not monotonous, but continually changeable with its specific brightness and dynamics. For the score to The First Olympics – Athens 1896, Bruce Broughton won the Emmy award and I am not surprised witch such a choice at all!

Performer:
Sinfonia of London, Conducted by Bruce Broughton
