When stereo sound was introduced on LPs in the late 1950s various left, right ping pong effects were used to emphasize the stereophonic effect. On many pop recordings of show music and soundtracks individual voices were placed in the left and right channels and instruments were highlighted in different channels as well. This type of gimmicky sound was abandoned by the late 1960s in favour of a more natural stereo spread and placement of vocalists in the center but the wackiest use of stereo ping pong was RCA’s STEREO ACTION series of recordings from the early 1960s which was advertised as "The Music Your Eyes Can Follow" and indeed you could whether you liked it or not. On Stereo Action records whole sections of the orchestra and/or singers would move back and forth across the left and right channels for no reason other than to make the listener fully aware of the stereo effect. Fortunately, these records were a lot of fun and some of the greatest musicians of the time performed on them and the sound was truly spectacular in a bizarre sort of way. The best of all these albums musically was Marty Gold’s IT’S MAGIC, released in 1961. The same year Gold also recorded an album of film themes called STEREO ACTION GOES HOLLYWOOD. Both of these long out of print albums are presented here in remastered versions, mixed from tape & LP sources preserving all their ping pong STEREO ACTION glory.
