I couldn’t find a recent thread on the subject, so I created a new thread. The SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) bill is trying to be passed in the United States and, if passed, could mean the end of this site (and countless others). For those of you who aren’t familiar with the bill, below is some information.

The bill states that "all websites containing media that refers to or is owned by a company that hasnt given its permission for the media to be displayed can and will be shut down. This means sites such as Tumblr, Wattpad, Pinterist, fanfiction.com.

People who post such media can and will be fined, with a maximum sentence of five years in prison. This includes, but is not limited to, people who own/post the following: fanfiction, fan art, roleplay blogs, fan blogs/accounts and movie streaming sites.

The legislation would allow copyright holders and the Justice Department to seek court orders against websites associated with copyright infringement. SOPA, the House version, applies to both domestic and foreign websites, while PIPA targets foreign websites. If that court order is granted, the entire website would be taken down. Internet users who typed in the sites URL address would receive an error message, and for all appearances, the site would never have existed. Importantly, the court does not need to hear a defense from the actual website before issuing its ruling. The entire website can be condemned without a trial or even a traditional court hearing."

You can sign a petition to stop the bill here (https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/stop-sopa-2014/q0Vkk0Zr).

How idiotic. Why is this back? Ugh….

Not the thread. I’m talking about this stupid SOPA stuff. You would think with all the negative reactions towards SOPA, the person or people behind it would have learned by now that this pretty much will not work. I can pretty much say that this one will be shut down as well, but better safe than not, I will be signing.

Thanks for the reminder. 🙂

No problem! 🙂 Only about 37,000 more signatures to go… assuming the survey has any power.

This again?! My God, this is the kind of oppression that George Washington & the Founding Fathers were trying to get away from; that the Constitution is supposed to DEFEND AGAINST!

Just checked the site, BTW. As of right now, the petition is just short of 15,400 signatures to go, so if you want to make absolutely sure this harbinger of censorship stays dead and buried, now is the time to let your voice be heard! LET FREEDOM RING!!!
