Indeed… Ikebe’s replacement worries me – not that I’m much of a fan of his, but at the same time variety is the spice of life and I was curious as to what he might come up with. I know pretty much exactly what Hisaishi will come up with – I don’t doubt that it will be excellent, but at the same time it’s ground that he has covered many, many times before. Somebody else – particularly an industry veteran like Ikebe – would have had a splendid opportunity.

It’s difficult to feel bad about two new Hisaishi animation scores in the same year, but I hope it doesn’t set a precedent – namely, if you want to score a Ghibli film you have to either write a Hisaishi score or you have to be Hisaishi. Of course, we don’t know the circumstances behind his departure – it may have been completely amicable, but at the same time his immediate replacement with JOE HISAISHI of all people is quite telling. Hisaishi ain’t cheap and you can’t exactly phone him up and say "Hi Joe, you doing anything this week? Wanna score my movie? I’ll buy you a pint or two later on…"

I don’t want Hisaishi to get over-stretched. Unlike some other composers who turn out music on a production line, Hisaishi takes his time and gets it right – even doing his own orchestrations 90% of the time. You just have to see him in action at the Budokan concert to understand his work ethic.

So, what happens? Does he sleepwalk through Kaguya-hime and save himself for Miyazaki’s movie? Unlikely. Does he put earnest effort in to Kaguya-hime, meaning he may end up creatively short-changing Miyazaki’s movie? Also unlikely. Does he work his fingers down the bone for both films and somehow bring out masterpieces for both? I sure hope so, but he’s a human being – and a sixty-two year-old at that.

I really hope he can make it through both, maintaining his high standards. Perhaps I’m worrying too much. Two new Hisaishi anime scores in 2013. Wheeee! 😀

About this album… woah, hard going isn’t it!! Thank you very much INDEED Mr Salat – I think I need to be in the right mood to enjoy this one… 😉

Something different from your usual upload, isn’t it? This will take patience and many listening sessions to truly "appreciate." Thank you nonetheless!
