ROMAN HOLIDAY (The Musical) ~ Michiru Oshima

In 1998 Oshima wrote the music for a stage musical based on the classic 1953 Hollywood film "Roman Holiday." In the movie, Audrey Hepburn plays a Royal Princess touring Rome who tires of her formal schedule and slips out of the Embassy to explore on her own. She meets an American journalist (Gregory Peck) who takes her on a personal tour of Rome, but when he realizes who she really is he has photos of her taken secretly that he can sell to magazines. Naturally, a romance also develops. Peck decides against selling the photos, but Hepburn is forced to return to the Embassy and her privileged life. They meet one last time at a press conference, each knowing that something wonderful could have happened between them, but also knowing it was an impossibility.

Though the cast, crew, and language of the musical is Japanese, Oshima’s score is anything but! There are waltzes, a tuneful beguine, a lively habanera, and some 50s swing. Clearly, the goal was to create a crowd-pleasing, old-fashioned Broadway musical. This is a live recording spread over 2 CDs, but there are no dialog-only tracks. Sound effects captured on stage are minimal, though the sudden blast of a Vespa horn will jolt you out of your Roman reverie.

Music by Michiru Oshima. Lyrics by Yuki Saito. Mao Daichi sings as Hepburn and Yuichiro Yamaguchi sings as Peck. Produced by the Toho Theatre Company with the Tokyo premiere in October 1998.

27 tracks (2 CDs) on Toshiba #TOCT 24051/52. Released in 1999.
The actual tray liner is just a collage of photos. For those of you who actually print the artwork off for your own jewelcase, I made a new tray liner using a page from the booklet that shows the track rundown.
