They don’t really imply that it’s a new console. In fact, in the first article you link, they say:

"It’s real, but the "PS4" isn’t meant literally. Sony won’t be unveiling a new console at E3. These are instead most likely ads for the PS3’s new 3D capability, with the "PS4" bit perhaps a reference to how futuristic it makes gaming; as in, 3D gaming is so good it’ll feel like a new console."

Sony said at their 3d press conference a good while ago that 3d capability would be added to the ps3.

Actually, the 3D games for the PS3 are coming out tomorrow.

Not really a big fan of this 3D fad, seeing as I can’t see in 3D.

I’d much rather just see a PS4…

I don’t see that happening any time soon. It would be completely ridiculous for sony to market a new console when they are releasing two new capabilities for the console, one of which could make them a pretty penny if it actually sells well:

1) 3d

2) Playstation Move

Why would you want a PS4? The PS3 still hasn’t reached its potential.

We’re going on 4 years in November, if they’re announcing it now through viral videos that would mean we prolly still have a few years to the gosh darn thing comes out anyway.

Sony’s still releasing games for the PS2, so as far as the company’s concerned they’re still in the "transition" stage to PS3. I doubt PS4 has even been discussed.

That has nothing to do with the 3D technology Sony is updating the PS3 with. I’ve never played the GOTY edition of AA, but from what I understand it still uses very primitive 3D technology.

Anyway, I really don’t see how Sony could announce the PS4 with a straight face. Since the launch of the PS3 they’ve been boasting that their multi-core Cell would last well into the next generation, which it would have to to justify the enormous launch price.

Not gonna happen. Not anytime soon. And how do any of those articles hint at a PS4?

3D is fucking useless, it needs to stop being treated like it’s this super awesome feature that’s the future of entertainment, like right fucking now.

I don’t think the PS4 would be out this or next year.

2012, however, maybe. Given that The Big N is rumored to have a next-gen Wii lined up for sometime in 2011 (yeah, they shot it down already, but we all knows what happens when big companies use suspiciously specific denials), Sony would be very brave to still stick to the PS3 while Nintendo introduces a shiny new console that’s most likely a Wii with a upscaler and HDMI port slapped on, with probably only more memory and a faster CPU.

That said, I agree with TM that 3D is useless. HD did wonders because it improved the images with no major drawbacks, but I don’t see it with 3D, especially since you need bothersome glasses and desktop-sized glassless 3D displays (Sharp’s parallax-barrier system) are still light years away from the consumer market.

And on the topic of glasses, how is it that this 3D system which produces a blurry image to those who’re not wearing glasses and requires the use of bulky, bluetooth enabled glasses better than an existing system (i.e. ChromaDepth) that uses light polarization and cheap plastic specs to do the trick and does not result in a blurry image to those who’re not wearing the glasses?

3D gives you a headache besides. Your brain wasn’t made to process those two images super imposing themselves on one another like that.

Well, considering that it took Sony years to come up with the PS2 after the PS1 and at least 2 years to come out with the PS3 after the PS2 was cracked, I really wouldn’t hold my breath. Most likely Sony will go the MS route and block access to the PSN or go the Nintendo route and brick the consoles with the next update. Or this being Sony, do something more drastic.

I don’t want PS4 to come out soon. I still need to buy PS3 🙂
