Note: this is ripped from my own personal copy of the vinyl. Equipment was an ION Profile LP to MP3 turntable and was captured on Magix Audio Cleaning Lab which was also used to remove pesky pops/clicks and help bring some more life to this already fantastic album. A light reverb was applied but to my ears it sounds so light I can’t even hear the difference.

I’ve been told the quality of the USB turntables is not for audiophiles and that it doesn’t have a good sound. Perhaps it’s because I’m a newbie but this mix sounds perfect. The stereofield (ESPECIALLY during The Grid cue) is much more pronounced in this recording and sounds better than I ever thought it could. It just has to be heard to be believed. During the recording phase, there were several pops and clicks but Magix fixed that up rather nicely to pristine condition.

You will notice that in the folder I split both sides of the record up into 2 folders but kept the numbering sequential. Also, I did not create a fade out on the end of Side A’s contents but instead just clipped off a little of the silence at the beginning of Side B’s recording and programmed it to where if you decide to put both Side A and B’s contents in a single folder. That way you can enjoy it as a complete experience minus the breaks to flip the record.

My sound card does not support 96/24 capture so in time, I will be able to upgrade my equipment but for now what I have is the best I can do. I’m sure you will all enjoy nonetheless.

i managed to get a blu-ray copy (full dts-hd ma lossless audio) and would be nice to compare it all.
even a DVD-A version too but I don’t know DVD-A formats so well.

As a side note: you may hear some faint crackling in places but rarely is it distracting. Also, Prophecies (track 6) seems to sound off tune at times particularly towards the end as the Koyaanisqatsi chant starts reprising. The vocals sound fine but the underscore sounds off in comparison to the expanded CD album. I assume that may be due to the vinyl itself. Experts can tell me more accurately.

I got in the process of ripping from the Bluray but got distracted and never finished. I did however manage to extract the audio data from the DVD-A disc. It’s a good re-recording, very spacious in its newly devised 5.1 soundfield but its issue is that it lacks a bit of the power from the original recordings. One expanded edition of the CD (keep in mind that there are two) features the music pretty much as it appears in the film, give or take a missing cue or two here and there. It doesn’t feel like much is missing when you hear that 70+ minute album but apparently a rip from the DVD reported around 83 or 84 minutes of music meaning nearly 10 minutes are missing from the album I’m referring to. The expanded album I’m referring to also has the sound effects (an instance includes birds chirping and nature sounds) featured in the film mixed in with the score. It sounds much better that way in my opinion but there was another re-recording released that, in my opinion, improved on the dynamics but failed to possess the same drive as the original score. Little nuances with the brass are muted in that mix along with the nature sounds. I suspect that re-recording I’m referring to is a downmix of that 5.1 audio track from the DVD-A as they both seem to disappoint me in the same areas.

This vinyl, while very incomplete, is a nice arrangement of the best cues from the score. Each side of the record gets a generous running time of around 23 minutes giving you the 46 minute running time. Keep in mind that these are not film edits but are very good album remixes. There are little nuances added that I can specifically recall not hearing in any of the other releases of this score.

yeah, probably also something to do with your rig setup.

I got a rip of the first release and then the newly remastered one that’s about 70min with the Coda that precedes Prophecies.

I haven’t had much time to go into that much detail for the BD though.

Thank *insert deity here* for digital copies of this expanded edition of the score. My record player nor the vinyl could’ve handled the amount of plays I’ve given it. It’s been a very inspirational score for me and is ranked as one of my top 5 favorite scores which is why I hold my vinyl in such high regard. It’s valuable to me and warrants many repeat viewings in the future; after I clean it, of course.

Anyway, this edition (Amazon.com: Koyaanisqatsi (1998 Re-recording): Music (http://www.amazon.com/Koyaanisqatsi-1998-Re-recording-Philip-Glass/dp/B00000AEDU/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1378129829&sr=1-1&keywords=koyaanisqatsi+glass)) is my least favorite and garners the least amount of replays.

Hope you get a chance to listen to this soon. I can’t stop re-playing The Grid. The stereo panning when the arpeggios kick in is wonderful.

I no longer use the USB record player but instead a line-in Audiotecnica and a new sound card which would allow for an improvement in quality but apparently the player needs a new cartridge (luckily the new one allows cartridge replacements) and the arm needs to be re-calibrated to have better balance however I’m no expert at that sort of thing so could take me a little while. This is a really great album so a re-rip is likely at some point.
