I like to write while listening to film scores. Right now I’m trying to build a playlist of creepy music to get me into the mindset for writing horror.

So I’m asking for your help in finding orchestrations that are unsettling, psychological, or otherwise creepy & twisted. Nothing too dissonant or bombastic…I’m looking for ‘atmospheric.’ Ennio Morricone’s score for The Thing and James Netwon Howard’s score for Signs are greart examples of the tone I’m looking for.

Whether it’s a particular track or an entire score, your recommendations are greatly appreciated!!!

Cheers,
-fudgonaut

About James Newton Howard, I’m listening to his work from "A Perfect Murder" now and to me it’s pretty disturbing (in a good way), so you may want to check it out. And how about the music from other horrors? "Bram Stoker’s Dracula" for example. Or maybe "Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark" or Burwell’s "The Chamber", though I’m not so sure about these two. Perhaps also "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer"? Elfman’s "Sleepy Hollow"? "The Devil’s Advocate"? "The Raven" by Lucas Vidal? "The Wolfman", again by Elfman? I’m not really into horrors, but maybe this will help you somehow. I hope!

Any section of score from the TV series Hannibal ought to do ya. It is nothing but atmosphere and creeps.

Thanks for the recommendations – I’ll give them a listen! In the meantime I found some tracks on a few of my non-horror film scores that actually work pretty well. If anyone’s interested, I’ll post a playlist once I’m done cobbling together a mix.

Try This. It is a game called Alan Wake. I always find that inspirational because I have to write a lot too. It is creepy, twisted and I am almost sure it will be okay. It is a score for a psychological thriller game. I hope it helps.

Not to mention that Alan Wake was himself a writer. Fitting.

Video Games:
The music from Shadowman by Tim Haywood (http://tinyurl.com/nhdd39c) is nice and nightmarish. As well as any of the Silent Hill soundtracks (Thread 46737).

Thanks guys, I will check them out!!!

I’m also finding some individual tracks from my current collection that fit unexpectedly well 😀

Which reminds me that I need to catalog my OST’s, to see if I have anything people here may be interested in…
