I have recently downloaded Newton Howard’s score to "The Man in the Moon" (very kindly provided by Lady Amalthea), and have absolutely fallen in love with it. It’s a little different from the kind of scores that I have usually heard from him, however. He usually has a velvety, sort-of melancholy sound to his music (which I really like), but The Man in the Moon has a more optimistic, brighter tone with a pastoral sound.

I’m wondering if anybody here could recommend any other Newton Howard soundtracks that are somewhat similar to The Man in the Moon? Thanks!

Anything that isn’t a retail album first.
Grab all his sessions first.

Then grab his retail albums.

Anything regarding fantasy, like Peter Pan, Maleficent, Lady in the Water, etc.

Hi bobtheknob,

I’m glad that you enjoyed "The Man in the Moon". It’s a beautiful score, I agree. <3

Well, I think James Newton Howard’s music from the 90s is one of his best works.
But I pretty much love everything he has done so far. 🙂

Anyway, the score which is most similar to "The Man in the Moon" would be "My Girl", which I’m still looking for after all these years…
I know it’s out there somewhere.

"French Kiss" is also highly recommended! You really shouldn’t miss that.
And while we’re at it, his score of "Dave" also has its moments.

Off the top of my head, Falling Down (1993), Nightcrawler (2014), and All The Way (2016).

Thanks to all of you for the suggestions. I’m familiar with all JNH’s scores for M Night Shyamalan (sp?), and his 2003 Peter Pan has been a favorite of mine for a number of years, as is Maleficent, and I have his Hunger Games albums as well. Another one I also enjoy is his Atlantis the Lost Empire score – but the other recommendations here are new to me, so I will see about checking them out. My absolute favorite from James has to be The Water Horse.
Beautiful score.

Seriously? Too small a list for such a great composer…

Alive
Dreamcatcher
Falling Down
Fantastic Beasts
Flatliners
French Kiss
The Fugitive
The Hunger Games
Lady in the Water
Maleficent
The Man in the Moon
Nightcrawler
Peter Pan
Primal Fear
Salt
Signs
Snow Falling on Cedars
Unbreakable
Waterworld
Wyatt Earp.

Some fantasy, action, thriller, brooding and atmospheric, romantic, … bit of everything in that list.
His "30 years" concert tour really showcased his talent. One of my favorite composers by far!
