Absolutely brilliant score. This is one of the most disturbing movies you’ll ever see. Not because of gore or gratuitous sex, but because of the imagery that is invoked through the telling of a story. The success that is achieved is due in part to the brilliant work of Mychael Danna. This is one of the more haunting scores I’ve heard. While there is no predominant theme that stands out like Star Wars or Titanic, the music is inherently a part of the story, and you "feel" the drama in part through the music. You can actually listen to the album apart from the movie and feel a story being told. Many movie scores cannot survive independently from the film, which is why 8MM is one of my favorites. If you read my other reviews, you will see several devoted to the art of movie-music, and I am an uncompromising critic as the music is like the finishing trim that frames the doors and windows of a new house. The rooms can stand alone, but without the finishing trim, the room looks incomplete. If the music of a movie is bad (aka The Firm, The Patriot, Chain Reaction) then the movie instantly loses its audience. If the music is a pioneer in guiding the feeling of the film (aka Braveheart, Gladiator, Blood Diamond) then the audience is swept in and mesmerized without realizing it. The music to 8MM would never be picked out of a line-up, but it’s a monumental achievement and can be appreciated on its own simply in its musical form. "Dance With The Devil" warrants particular attention, though the entire album is a trip into the darkest regions of your subconscious.
