My Favorite Movies of 2017

This was certainly an interesting year in film. Some good, some bad. Here are my favorite film’s I saw this year.

What were your favorite movies of the year?

In the top spot of my list there’s "Blade Runner 2049" by Denis Villeneuve, that despite a few considerable flaws, reaches levels of cinematic mastery that no other high-budget film (my favourite category of movies) this year reached.

Here are others, not in order of appreciation.
"Logan" by James Mangold.
"Wonder Woman" by Patty Jenkins.
"Spider-Man: Homecoming" by Jon Watts.
"Thor: Ragnarok" by Taika Waititi.
"King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" by Guy Ritchie. This one I think is my favourite in terms of style and entertainment. The other main contender should have been Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but due to the heavy changed it got, it became something different that I didn’t really like.
"War for the Planet of the Apes" by Matt Reeves.
"A Cure for Wellness" by Gore Verbinski.

Particular films:

"Dunkirk" by Christopher Nolan. This was one of my most anticipated film of the year, and for good reasons. I expected a hugely-immersive, emotionally deep and thoughtful representation of this WW2-changing event, with a score as good as Interstellar was in 2014. That film, for me, set a new standard for Nolan, that of the strong emotional connection and pay-off to the characters.
What the film ended up being was actually a sort of live reconstruction of the event, with the cameras randomly following three groups of people. Zero characters introspection, zero emotional immersion, zero "intellectual" ideas about the event. Hans Zimmer’s music does the exact thing, music-wise.
Sure, this way the film got a 100% realistic feel to it and in a certain way, it’s a priceless achievement. But there’s no way (at least for me) that this film is as good as it could get, with its huge potential.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2" by James Gunn… For me did some things very right (it fleshed out the characters’ relationships and backstories) but others that I didn’t really appreciate, like some humor that heavily cut the drama in a few moments or that was cheap for some easy laughs. While the first one managed to use the humor perfectly, this one had a few problems for me. And the overall plot isn’t that great. Though, I totally loved Yondu’s character.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" by Rian Johnson. This one has some very strong positives and many "meh" things for me. Sure enough, I consider this to be the best shot and directed Star Wars film after The Empire Strikes Back. I totally loved everything related to the Rey-Luke-Kylo storyline, it gave me almost everything I could dream of. Despite I expected something very different from Luke, I totally loved what Rian Johnsons did with him. Also, the entire film has such excellent performances from the whole cast, that The Force Awakens pales in comparison, with its performances not being that credible after numerous viewings. Also, the way Rian Johnson handled the connection between Rey and Kylo through editing is masterful and the fighting choreography is incredibly gorgeous, while the lightsaber fights and Force scenes in The Force Awakens were handled respectively with quick cuts and dutch angles / cheap shots. My main problems are related with the entire storyline involving Leia’s fleet being in danger for the entire film, from the very ending of the opening space battle to the very beginning of the Crait Battle. It feels pointless.
Also, the score wasn’t that great for me, at first and second viewings.

I didn’t see many movies in the theater in 2017, but here are the ones I’ve seen and liked:
