Michael Tippett – The Midsummer Marriage, Opera in 3 Acts (1955) LPs in Flac

Michael Tippett (1905 – 98) was the closest thing Britten had to a rival as top dog in British contemporary music.
But even to his fans it has always been a bit of a hit and miss situation across his output. This along with the second Symphony
and a few other notable works stand amongst the peaks of British music. Yes the story and Libretto are mush, but it’s opera
dammit the whole notion of people singing at each other is ridiculous in the modern era and requires a major suspension of disbelief.
But that’s what is great about opera or musical theatre in general just dive in and get pulled along.

Musically this work is nothing but super muscular tunes and the whole thing has a spring in it’s step from start to finish.. turn it up and clean your house!!!

Haven’t listened to Tippet’s King Priam in ages, and I’m totally unfamiliar with his The Midsummer Marriage. Perhaps it’s time to reacquaint myself with this composer.
