Metropolis (Giorgio Moroder 1984 version) (Complete)

In 1927 Fritz Lang created what is described today as one of the most significant science fiction films of all time, elements of which would inspire elements of another sci-fi film, Star Wars. When the film was released in the US is was subsequently shortened with many of the scenes eventually being lost. Over time the movie was virtually lost forever.

In 1984 Giorgio Moroder commenced the first serious restoration of the movie however using various coloured tints in scenes, adding minor sound effects and included a modern pop musical score to the film, much to the chagrin of film purists. At that time it was the longest version of the film. Apart from a VHS release the film was also released on Laserdisc. Over time this version of the film has become a cult classic. HOWEVER after the VHS and Laser disc releases this version all but disappeared and copies of it were highly prized by their owners and collectors.

Years before the official 2011 Blu-ray release of the Moroder version a 2 year, fan made restoration called "Metropolis Redux" was doing the rounds using the available Laser disc as the main source and the quality is AMAZING.

When purchased the buyer would receive a copy in a DVD case with cover and special features that included a music video of Freddie Mercury’s "Love Kills" and the entire soundtrack in MP3.

I think Moroder’s version is great and it really was one of those films that sparked my interest in old and classic films. Many people (in the industry) love to dump on this version but if it sparks the interest in early films then it can’t be THAT bad.

But what Moroder’s version REALLY did was to shine the spotlight on the old films that were in danger of being lost forever if they weren’t preserved.

When it was released in Germany in 1927 it ran for 153 mins (24 fps). When it was re-edited for its US release it was reduced to approx. 116 mins with the possibility it may have been shortened again in other cities. By the time Moroder released his version it was only 83 mins long, and that was after his restoration. However, since 1984 this movie has gone through several restorations that has resulted in the film now being presented as near to its original full length as possible albeit approximately 5 mins which remains missing to this day.
