I mean, anything they do now will only deteriorate the image that the original game held. True, it might be nice to see Sephiroth and Cloud in their younger days, but there’s no real need to see where the story goes. (We know Sephiroth goes bad, we know Cloud doesn’t die at Nibelheim, we know that certain key characters aren’t gonna perish.) It takes away from the excitement and the enjoyment of the game.
That’s only my opinion though.
Playing as Sephiroth. I’ve said the same about Magus from Chrono Trigger.
Certain characters may never be the main character of any sequel, prequel, whatever. Fascinating, mysterious characters lose all their appeal when you use them too much, espesially when you turn them into the main character. The player must not identify with them, there must remain a distance between them. Mistrust, maybe. Respect.
Really cool characters must not apear all the time, else their fascination wears off. Extreme example could probably be Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Used to be incredibly cool, but in the end he was… bleh. Normal. Emberassing even. That was sad; he used to be my favourite character but in the end I hated whenever he appeared on screen because every scene took away of his fascination. 🙁
