Manos Hadjidakis: GIOCONDA’s SMILE – 1965 Symphonic Suite – New Remaster FLAC

Gioconda’s Smile (Greek: Το Χαμόγελο της Τζοκόντας) is one of the most famous albums by Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis. It is considered one of the classic albums of 20th century music in Greece. The album was recorded in New York in 1965, with Quincy Jones as producer. It was first released in USA in 1965 with twelve orchestral songs, and that same year in Greece, but "The Athletes" and "The Soldier" were not included. The Suite of 12 instrumental songs is a blend of despair and reminiscences. The theme is a solitary woman in the big city. Each song is a monologue of hers which together compose her story, a story which is modern and, yet at the same time, old. This remaster of “Gioconda’s Smile” was transferred and remastered from a 4 track stereo tape of the original complete version released in the US on Fontana Records. This was one of my maternal Greek grandmother’s favourite albums and she brought her almost worn out monaural Columbia Greece LP with her to America. Imagine her delight when I found an almost mint stereo LP of the Fontana US version with 2 extra songs and gave it to her. I wish she were alive to hear this new remastering which I dedicate to her and to the great Greek composer who gave us this beautiful music, Manos Hadjidakis.
