I love Mahler’s symphonies, is this #4 recording 1965?
Thanks for sharing.

is this #4 recording 1965?According to the album’s back liner, the 4th was recorded on October 1 & 2, 1965 in Severance Hall, Cleveland. http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg548/dsphipps100/nod.gif

Recommendation recordings for many years. I own LPs and early CD remasters, lets try new remaster. Szell was a fantastic Mahlerian, but there are only a few regular recordings. Many thanks for this superb share.

Thanks for the share. I hadn’t known that Szell conducted Mahler … I think of all the "old" conductors, Bruno Walter was the closest as he was a pupil of Mahler, IIRC.

Thank you bobtheknob for the post. This Szell version of the 6th was my first experience with Mahler back in the early ’70’s. This is a very nice reading but Sir John Barbirolli’s 6th on EMI has become my favorite although the glacially slow tempi and Sir John’s grunts took some time getting used to but well worth the effort for the sheer emotional impact he created.

…the glacially slow tempi…If you like your Mahler 6 a bit on the slow side (as opposed to Bernstein’s quick-step version, for example), then you might ought to give the Rattle-Birmingham version a try. They even go so far as to slightly drag out the bass notes in the opening ostinato, giving the opening a weighted-down, laborious feel. Interestingly, Rattle also places the Scherzo third and the andante second, plus he also "restores" the third hammer blow in the finale. Mahler went through several different opinions during his life on how the sixth should be performed (order of movements, number of hammer blows), so a case can be made for the legitimacy of Rattle’s approach. (For what it’s worth, my favorite 6th is the Bernstein-Vienna version. Your mileage may vary, however.)

Thanks bobtheknob for the tips. I will seek out the Rattle/Birmingham and Bernstein/Vienna versions for comparison to the Barbirolli reading.
