Magic: The Gathering, for those not in the know, is the original trading card game – it existed before all your fancy pokemans and such.

It’s also available to play online!

Since i’ve moved to a place which doesn’t have a high enough nerd population to support my Magic addiction, i’m going back to online play – but i’m missing out on the social aspect of kicking the same person’s ass repeatedly to the curb.

Sooooo…

Who wants to play online with me?

The game won’t let me pick which mana I want use and picks for me. It screws me over when I want to cast something in a specific order. 🙁

You’re thinking about Duel of the Plainswalkers. That game is bad.

…actually, it’s not bad, it’s a pretty good intro to MtG.

I’m talking about MtG Online – you actually make your own decks, and you have full control over mana distribution etc. The only downside is that you actually have to buy cards/boosters. The upside is that the virtual goods have an equal value to the paper goods because sets are redeemable – if you pull a virtual Jace, The Mind Sculptor you can sell it for $76 realbucks.

…Sssooo…you’re spending *real* money for *fake* cards?

On a slight divergence, which Duels of the Planeswalkers are we talking about? The OLD(read: ancient) version I have is pretty fun, to be honest, with full manual mana distribution and deck customization(only has sets up to Arabian Nights, though).

Yes…and it sounds as stupid as you think.

I haven’t played it because I heard of that.

online cards are worth less, and the boosters are generally more. but i guess if you want mtg without the social interaction aspect, have at it.

(mtgo is boring magic is only fun in person)

Well, fake depends on your interpretation – personally I think it’s just as stupid to spend real money on pieces of carboard.

(Looks over at his IRL MTG collection).

Yeah… stupid <.<

I agree that the social aspect isn’t as good on MTGO – that’s why when I found an awesome bunch of IRL people to play with, I switched to paper Magic exclusively.

Unfortunaetly I now live 6 hours drive from them, and the IRL MTG players near me aren’t as good – AND my local comic store overcharges for boosters – $8/pack, and doesn’t offer discounts for draft sets. Also, their rewards scheme for winning draft/tournaments/etc sucks – 1 booster each for the top 3.

So i’ve switched back to MTGO, but you’re right about the social aspect, so i’m trying to convince people i know to play with me so we can Skype and shit-talk while doing so 😀

EDIT: By the way, i’m talking about the new game Duel of the Plainswalkers – on XBLA and Steam. It’s basically a bunch of premade decks that you can’t modify. The old Microprose game you’re talking about was kinda awesome.

Half the time my PS3 is just on because I forget to turn it off.

Also: I have no headset, and I hate using onscreen keyboards to chat.
