Have you ever wondered what Kentaro Haneda did after retiring from composing for anime titles? Well, if you want to experience for yourself what musical routes took Haneken in the mid 90s, these albums will satisfy your curiosity.

These albums are a collection of original pieces which maestro Haneda performed for a TV Asahi news show. For almost five years, Kentaro Haneda showcased his pianist skills for all the audience of this TV program and to add more spectacularity to this show he performed those pieces in scenic spots from Japan first, then around the world. Yeah, the covers of the albums are more or less what happened in real life, for example, in the liner notes it’s explained how hard and exciting was to go to Mount Fuji for the recording. Anyway, the music included in these albums are selections of those pieces performed first live on TV, but fear not, here all the pieces are studio recordings.

Now, let’s talk about the music. The first volume is the less consistent of the three albums, a bit of a hit-or-miss, although with great pieces like the Debussy inspired "The Snow is Dancing" or the band number "Burning Skyscraper". In the second album, Haneda takes a more introspective tone, instead of paiting external imagery with his music like in the first volume, he explores the inner thoughts and feelings of japenese people; "Mild Sense of Superiority" is a wonderful solo piano piece and worthy of the title. And the third album, my favourite one, Haneda goes in full nostalgic mode, with "Grandpa’s Favorite Things" and "Once Upon a Time, in a Certain Place…" taking a special place in my heart.

I know that for some people the music of this amazing musician may sound dated, but that’s part of his appeal. As a genius as he was, in some pieces I admit that he indulges too much in corny figures, nobody’s perfect. Anyway, his personality as a human being is well depicted by his music, full of humor, elegant simplicity, transparency and good feelings. If you have a connection with his music as I do, you can almost see what’s on his mind when the music plays. A musician of wonders, multifaceted like no other.

I hope you appreciate the effort, because music of this quality must be enjoyed for as many people as possible.

Note: Although I’m sharing the whole 3 albums of Poem Japanesque in lossless quality, only the second and third volumes are Flac rips done by myself, I found the first one online in APE.
