Johann Johansson is a new name, at least for me, but it turns out he is not new to film music at all. This Icelandic composer has, according to imdb, been active since 2000. Prisoner’s is my introduction to him, but it has created more questions than answers. Prisoner’s is built on these medium long ambient like cues for the most part. There is a musical language here that you may love, but I’m still on the fence. There’s a lot of interesting stuff to discover here as every cue offers something underneath the surface. The underlying texture here speaks a language I don’t quite understand, but there are certain moments that make you sit up and listen like the sudden burst of dark strings in ‘Escape’.
