I won’t bore you with an essay on the film. You probably know what the film is about, how it was acclaimed during its premiere, then subsequently butchered beyond coherency to get more theatrical showings a day which ended up causing it to be a box office disaster and likely cost Judy Garland her Academy Award for Best Actress. You probably know that today, in the 30-some-odd years since its restoration to nearly its original premiere length, it’s been reappraised as a dramatic musical masterpiece, with what many consider to be the finest performance of Judy Garland’s storied film career.

Although the film was shot in Cinemascope, which supported a 4-channel stereo soundtrack, and the film’s soundtrack was mixed in that format, the stereo recording sessions do not survive. In fact, the deleted scenes in the restored version required a bag of tricks to create stereo, as audio for those scenes only survived in mono. In 1954, when the film was released, most record labels were not recording in stereo or even creating stereo album masters (although RCA was experimenting with stereophonic recording as early as 1952) so Columbia Records, where Judy was briefly signed at the time, mixed the numbers down to mono for the album master and never created a stereo master. Sadly, this means that the soundtrack album is a mixture of stereo and mono materials. The underscore (except for the overture and finale), both bonus tracks, and three of the songs are in mono. The rest are in stereo, taken directly from the film’s 4-channel stereo mix. While sound effects were rarely an issue, they were for a portion of "Gotta Have Me Go With You," so the producers of this release replaced that brief portion with the mono soundtrack album master. (The same had been done for the song’s inclusion on the Rhino compilation Judy Garland In Hollywood.) The underscore here includes pieces cut from the film, while "The Man That Got Away" is presented on CD for the first time ever with its complete intro, a lot of which isn’t in the final film. The album concludes with two bonus tracks – "When My Sugar Walks Down The Street," which was cut from the "Born In A Trunk" medley, and the Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo commercial jingle, which is presented here in poor quality from the only surviving source – a worn acetate playback disc. Unless the complete stereo recording sessions for the film’s musical magically pop up one of these days, this is pretty much the final word in this particular soundtrack and deserves a place in the collection of any Judy Garland fan or anyone who loves classic film. Ripped from my own CD and includes three 600 X 600 covers from the original vinyl release (the cover of which was replicated for the cover of this CD version) and a subsequent reissue, plus complete artwork scans.
