Holst: The Planets / St. Paul’s Suite (Sir Charles Groves, Castle, 1997)

Little known trivia: prior to Groves’ recording of The Planets, Holst’s work used to include an additional movement (No.3 – "Earth") — unfortunately, it could not survive Groves’s earth-shattering performance! 🙂

Not true, of course. The Planets is a suite based on the astrological meaning of the planets, and the earth doesn’t have one. So there never was an "Earth" movement.

Thank you for this. It’s a particularly fine performance. Too bad Amazon USA doesn’t offer it on CD.

There never was any "Earth" movement. This is an astrological suite, and Earth has no astrological relevance. 😉

Thank you!
I used to think there ought to be another movement added called "Pluto, the Bringer of Bones" but of course it isn’t a planet any more ;(

composer Colin Matthews did write an addition called "Pluto, the Renewer" back in the early 2000s
