I figured I’d make a Tom Waits thread, because he’s awesome and I know he’s got a few appreciators here.

So I guess I’ll say more later but for now, favourite albums and songs and other such discussion?

I listened to a couple Tom Waits songs and I couldn’t decide if I liked them or not. I guess that means I should listen to a couple more.

I’ve never liked his style, honestly. I’m going to get shot now.

Good thing with Tom Waits is that his style has changed over the years. He started out doing a sort of jazz music with a mixture of singing and spoken word, but with Swordfishtrombones he moved into weirder music, using all sorts of cool instruments and sound effects and twisting his voice around.

As far as his older stuff goes, Nighthawks at the Dinner is awesome, with the whole live show thing, all his little anecdotes and phrases. Small Change has some great tunes too.

For his newer stuff, I really like Mule Variations, because it goes everywhere, from simple piano pieces to crashing bizarre songs like ‘Filipino Box Spring Hog’ and ‘Eyeball Kid’. His newest CD, Real Gone, is great too, because he does beatboxing loops in a bunch of the songs, his son is on turntables and he didn’t use the piano at all. Pretty cool.

I think it’s just great that he manages to do new stuff and stay awesome after all this time.

I really like Mule Variations too. Most people don’t and to be honest, I wasn’t that crazy about it the first time I heard it. It grew on me pretty quick though, and I’m a huge Tom Waits fan because of it.

What was the album he covered Somewhere on? That cover gives me goosebumps.

His new cd- the one that came out last year- that was pretty great too.
