This is an interesting tribute to the record producer’s art. The original live relay of this performance was awash with reverb (it being recorded, bizarrely, in the resounding acoustic of St Paul’s) but thanks to some close miking and even cleverer post production, the sound emerges with a decent level of clarity. For those new to this recording, expect a latter-day Solti-type performance: high on adrenalin, fairly light on musical depth.

I think this and Mahlers 2nd are some of the best symphonies written in the last century or so.
